Only one suggestion I can think of: If I'm not mistaken the "All forums" tab is redundant. After all it's identical to the Threads menu at the top, isn't it? Only difference is, it also features pinned threads and lets you choose subcategories at the top without an additional click. So in my eyes it's not needed and could be hidden in the overview.

Because people also shoot "full spectrum" with no filters involved is there room to include that in the title e.g. IR/UV/Full Spectrum ?

I just visited the test link using a desktop computer and really like the new layout. All the chapters and their sub-forums fit nicely on two screens. It's sort of like a newspaper experience with content above and below the fold. I think this simplification of the home page layout will make the site more inviting to new visitors. Hopefully, that will translate to a more active site.
