Good to see a post! Improvement is always good. Give it time (or a lighter kit😁. On my way back on a trail yesterday I came across a young woman (about 35?) carrying a Z9 and an 800mm tele! Engaged in conversation, she said she did not mind carrying the load. She also said her 500 is heavier. BTW my wife shuttered at the cost when I told her.

The 500mm she is talking about is probably the f4 and that new 800mm PF is a wonderful lens. That combination will set on back a few months pay. I have a friend that has the old 800mm f5.6 and carrying it got him a hernia operation.

Thanks. We arrived at the location just after a good rain. Overcast skies are the best at bringing out the color. and the 70-300 is becoming a resident on my X-H2.

Varying modern and super sharp Fuji’s 80mm, and a couple of vintage lenses, each with their character.

Excellent shots, both with vintage and modern lenses! Which older lenses do you use? Given that I seem to recall seeing your name on the dpreview adapted lens forum, I'm sure you're already aware of it, but please feel invited to add your wonderful vintage shots to the "adapted lens" section as well!

    Barn Swallows

Looking back at some of the last images I took before coming down with tendinitis in my left elbow. I was shooting hand held and switched to the tripod soon after starting to feel my arm tire. that was probably too late.

    Hi, Morris,

Great images as usual. It is apparent you have a technique for getting great images using your 500mm Nikkor. The question is whether or not you could be successful at a shorter focal length with maybe a slight diminution of reach and a little in IQ. My back is my limiting factor. Large teles and/or zooms are history. However, I have begun to appreciate the combo of my X-T5 or X-H2 w/70-300 either by itself or with the 1.4x extender. The 500 is just a tad under 2 pounds heavier than the 70-300. If your tendentious was primarily caused by what you do as a photographer then give it some consideration. Even consider the H2 or T5 for its added resolution even though you would have to compromise in the FPS and buffer. Even so, today's cams are way ahead of what you used to do in the past.

    Curious your thoughts.

    Bob

Here's another similar one (shorter focal length) from the same viewpoint around an hour earlier, before the golden light illuminated the misty layers :

Wow, thanks so much! I follow your work on flickr and really appreciate the comments. Your work was one of the inspirations for getting into vintage lenses to start with!! It has not been a long journey, only a few months but incredibly rewarding.

I did not realize that “adapted lenses” are here too, I did post a few times on DPreview’s Adapted Lenses forum. I have not really gotten to flickr, I browse there but there is almost too much content, you can see some of my experiments on 500px, I typically annotate lenses I use there, all on X-T3.

The lenses in this post were X-Fujinon 50mm f1.4 and MOG Trioplan 50mm f2.9. I only recently discovered that sharpness is not everything so I now shoot wide open with less fear :-)

    Thanks again!!
    Mark

    Thank you Bob,

I came to Fuji to reduce the weight of my gear when I had 3 pinched nerves, neck and both wrists. I first shot with the X-T3 and 100-400 with and without TCs. I hesitated to get the 100-400 due to it's build and it only survived 1.5 yeas of my use. I replaced the 100-400 with a Sigma 150-600C while waiting for Fuji to repair the 100-400. I liked the extra reach and sold the 100-400. The 70-300 is a nice lens and I use it when I want to travel light such as when I'm hiking. It may be a step for me while I heal. The issue with such a short lens is that it becomes difficult to avoid stressing my subjects so I must shoot from a blind or greatly reduce my opportunities. I think the answer is to always shoot off my tripod so I'm not carrying the weight with my sensitive left arm. I also need to limit the amount I shoot and this may be the critical step. Apparently 3 days a week or less is fine while more than that sometimes is an issue.

My plan is to try taking photos in my back yard using the 500 PF on a tripod and pay attention to how I feel. I'll adjust plans after this test. That is ableist two weeks away. I can also photograph other subjects that don't require such heavy gear.

    I appreciate your suggestion Bob,

    Morris
