I don' t use any storage site at all. Maybe one day, I will. Not sure and not convinced yet.
At the moment it' s simply me/my computer and a few external hard drives.
I back up to my NAS, and a generic storage box on Hetzner (a hosting service). Considering the marginal cost of Hetzner storage boxes, the Synology NAS is clearly the more expensive part of this.
This question about a domain name however implies a website with some sort of online portal for viewing pictures. This I host in form of a curated Publii blog on Uberspace (another hosting provider), and as a complete archive of all my pictures on Cewe MyPhoto, which I get for mostly-free as it accrues 10% of each photo book print with Cewe, which I do a lot of.
Sorry AlainCh2 for my answer but I can't figure it out with replying with quote.
Just looked on the site but it was exactly there that it was only for Windows
Or maybe I have looked for a program and therefore not correct?
I use Smugmug to display my photos.
I have 6 TB spread on 4 drives in my tower, where I keep all my work in progress. For storage, I back all that up on a Synology NAS, itself backed up to 16 TB drives kept offsite from time to time.
I use BackBlaze for off-site ,disaster backups for all my photography work. This includes:
o All original files -raw and in-camera JPEG, flat negative scans (VueScan DNG). All of these are automatically copied to an external drive every time there is an import to Lightroom Classic
o All Lightroom Classic folders-LIbrary image files,Catalog Files, LR backups, Presets, etc. However the LR previews folder is not backed up
o All the files I use for my web site.
o Images I have sent to print labs.
I’m pleased with BackBlaze. The UI is minimal but complete. The cost is reasonable. I pay for the 1 year restore deleted data option. I tried Microsoft One Drive and Google Drive. Both were awkward to use for off-site backups. They are really meant as cloud sharing options. iCloud is not useful at all as an off-site recovery tool for anything but iOS devices. MacOS recovery is possible if you start from scratch (new Mac or a setting up a Mac you own as completely clean device). Furthermore, if you use iCloud as a means to save Mac internal storage, strange things can happen with Time Machine backups. I don’t like Dropbox and didn’t test it as an off-site recovery option.
I use an internal 2tb hard drive that backs up automatically to Microsoft OneDrive. All my files (not just photos) are on that drive. I only have 1tb of OneDrive storage, but for now, it's simple and works well.
I also have the option to use Amazon Photos (as a Prime family member) but I've never really bothered. Perhaps I should.
Just to clarify, Adobe Portfolio is not for storage. It's for displaying photos.
You can sync as many small previews from LrC to Lr (web) as you like, completely for free, and if you want to you can use those small files in Portfolio. But those photos do need to be stored locally at your PC.
Sorry if this has already been said.
I use 8 TB in 4 hard drives in my main station, another assorted external hard drives for in house redundancy (Around 12 TB) and Blackblaze as remote/ external backup.
SmugMug might be an option. Unlimited storage for JPEGs; RAW image storage is more costly. They've been around a long time and now own Flickr. Plan info is here: www.smugmug.com/plans
PS. I have no affiliation with SmugMug.
I treat storage, backup, distribution and display as separate items, though linked.
Storage: I store all my images locally on a 10Gb drive, and manage/edit them with Lightroom Classic.
Backup: This local storage is backed up online with Backblaze.
Distribution: I create LR collection sets and collections of all my images, synced with the Adobe Cloud. This gives unlimited storage of smart previews in the Adobe Cloud. I can send a link to any of these collections to other people (e.g. family, friends), from where they can download them.
Display: My website (with my own domain name) is hosted by Format, which has a Lightroom plugin. I can then publish a collection from Lightroom to my website, where it appears as a gallery. This link to Lightroom was the main advantage of Format over Squarespace at the time I set it up. It would be worth checking if Squarespace has a similar LR plugin now. This makes it easy to edit and update website content, without paying for extra online storage (which Format also offers).
Hi Jim - I take it you're happy with GoodSync? Are you using the free version?
I currently use Backblaze's own backup app (which only works with its cloud storage), but also Lacie Toolkit (a free app), that can sync internal and external drives as well. It would be handy to have one backup app that can do both.
I used to use Microsoft's SyncToy, but that seems to have died of old age.
Show me a link to where "everything you download in google is owned by Google.inc" is true for Google Workspace. I don't remember seeing that. It doesn't make much sense, given all the big companies that use Google Workspace.
It was couple of years ago in Gmail agreement, but I don't see it in workspace.google.com/terms/premier_terms.html because it is too long and too complicated to understand for a customer (why?).
I answer two questions with one post.
In Zonerama > eu.zonerama.com/ that's the raw URL to access it
you can create your own gallery... and sub galleries... then you'll upload photos from wherever you want.
That's not for storage but only for a permanent place showing pictures and it gives you a photo's presence on the web for free.
For that reason, it doesn't depend on what system you are using: Linux, Microsoft, Apple, Android, IOS.
I store on Dropbox 120€/y = 2TB for whatever I need to reach online.
The Computer manages 32G Ram and has 2x M.2 1Tb (Samsung 980PRO)
That content will be FileSynced for free twice a day on the local HDD. (freefilesync.org/ )
2x 8TB HHD get all the working load and the archived files - one batch FileSync daily with the other
- When I will need more I will Add a couple of HDDs or replace them with bigger HDDs
( I got that couple of >Toshiba 8TB - Refurb< for 150€ - they'll last me some )
- No NAS no RAID >KIS<
As for using my own domain name:
I never explored that option and don't even know if it is or it isn't possible, sorry.
I have my own domain and my own site, but nothing connects that presence to my Zonerama Gallery, nor do I intend to connect them.
