A few weeks ago I was at an air show and really, I was stunned by the number of "real" cameras that I saw. I seem to have been the only one with an m43 camera, but just about everything else was represented.
On the first day I saw a lot of teenagers with APS-C Canon and Nikon DSLRs with, probably, 75 to 300mm lenses. Unfortunately I didn't capture any of them. Folks with larger lenses tended to stay put and were easier targets. ;)
This last one exemplifies what I saw a lot of. Young people with advanced, more expense gear always seemed to be with a dad or grandad who had even more advanced, expensive gear.
The second day I saw a lot more shooters with cameras like Leicas and Fujis but with standard lenses. They seemed to be going after the static exhibits. I didn't capture any of those folks. But there were plenty of other people carrying those big lenses that they wouldn't have to if they were using m43. ;)
If you look at the stickers on this guy's lens, you can tell that he must be a regular at air shows.
For me the Olympus ZD 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 did the job. :)
It seems that there remains a real interest in the kind of images you can only get with a camera, and while maybe not for everyday use, there still is a place for it. It also seems that a lot of people willing to put out money for gear. Considering the number of young people I saw using DSLRs, I think those low priced entry point kits are important to getting them into the game. Let's hope the camera makers don't forget them.
