Is it a bug, or is it intentional? I personally don't like it.

It seems to be intentional. While I feel the shade could use some fine-tuning, I do like the demarcation.
Another vote for not liking it very much, but I don’t feel that strongly about it. I have also posted in the ‘Features’ forum about readability problems with the grey-on-pink admin notices.
But I do like very much the ‘go to top of page’ button which has appeared at the end of every thread.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention — though the keyboard shortcuts were becoming muscle memory.
I like the separation. Maybe the shade of gray could be a little lighter, but I like the separation in general (just like I like it in spreadsheets :))
Normally I use shading extensively for separation in documents so I find it surprising that I don’t like it here. It seems to give a confusing and untidy look. Maybe it’s the colours/shades? I’m sure I’ll get used to it, though.

Shading threads this way is really bad.
Confusing is the least to say.
( no idea if writing BallsBreaking is correct )
I don't like this styling either. Never seen it done on forums.
I think part of the problem for me is that the shaded ones look like they’re quotes.

No it's definitely not a bug and I personally like it because it separates the posts more clearly.
Trying things out. At some stage we'll have a full style audit from proper designers, but at the moment we're seeing what we can do without breaking it all 😉
Thanks for the replies and info everyone.
I think it's useful. Only thing I'd change is make the darker gray shading much lighter. Still dark enough to be obvious, but lighter in general (which would be more elegant but still practical). :)
