It's a Nikon thing, for people who have a Nikon DSLR who like to think that their camera is better than the run-of-the-mill Nikon APS-C DSLRs. I remember a huge argument about whether they should allow D7000 users in there. It's a bit of an anachronism on DPReview, because the 'FX' forum isn't split 'pro' and others, and also includes 'professional' DX cameras such as the D1 and D2 models. I suspect what's coming on the same basis is requests for a separate forum for Z9 and Z8 users.
I'd vote 'no' given that the traffic won't be big and we already have too many forums.
Well I have no choice but to stay. A mod over there banned me, in which all my posts needed to be approved and I can't even PM to find out more. All because I posted about this forum when it was brand new and we were under the impression DPR was closing down for good.
Also I'm glad we didn't move to Reddit. Tech news articles claim they are trying to kill off 3rd party apps.
It's for the better, I actually prefer the layout of this site. It's more with the times. The only thing I miss is the DPR EF-M section is more active.
I think there was a different skill set between the D200, D300, D500 shooters that comprised the ProDx forum. (also contained the D100 but likely not many shooting that now) It would be too muddled with D3500s etc thrown in with it. Not every sub forum needs heavy traffic.
With the continuing presence of certain members and the addition of others of their ilk, I am spending more time on other sites than hitherto - including DPR.
I‘m afraid a couple of people see it that way… which is unfortunate. I‘d certainly love to stay here but if I‘ll remain more or less alone in a subsection, what‘s the point? I‘m willing to give it a chance and ignore the couple of distractions for now though - hope you‘ll consider that as well. 👍
As I remember, it was something to do with the layout of controls. I think the Nikon ‘amateur’ cameras had PASM and the professional models shared a different layout, though I may be wrong as I wasn’t paying that much attention - nor do I know whether it was a significant enough difference to justify separate fora.
Yes, assuredly, having a mode wheel rather than a push and select interface on your camera makes you a really different kind of photographer. Strangely that never seemed to concern Canon users, when they decided that the 5D series were professional level cameras, and indeed the 7D series, which was thought to be Canon's equivalent of the D300 line. I think 'significant enough' is a bit of a moveable feast. We have too many forums. The traffic in many of them is very small. So what is it about the different practice between a D500 owner and a D7500 owner that means that they can't coexist in the same forum? With the present traffic they are hardly going to get overloaded with threads that aren't applicable to them.
Sorry, it's way more than a couple of distractions and sadly I can't ignore them although I know I should ... even going to the extent of starting a thread myself naming names and suggesting that we all should do just that.
I'm a grumpy old man and mainly interested in technical discussion to keep the brain active. Unfortunately, technical discussion appears to attract bombasts or trolls who then battle each other to the detriment of this site. When the cognoscenti post correct statements which could be of use to some people here, those statements are quickly buried by more claptrap and, really, why should we have to scroll though page after page in order to sort the wheat from the chaff, eh?
Hoping that the bombasts and trolls will migrate to and continue to be migrated to the Dumpster thereby providing rich entertainment for those who like that kind of thing.
