This weekly thread is principally intended for you to show others the photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. BUT all brands of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your photos.

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we hope that all will join in and comment on others' photos.

    Steve,

That's a nice capture of the moon with the tree silhouette. I like that dark blue color of the sky too.

    Subject: VW Bugs

This summer I have been collecting pictures of VW bugs that I have seen at car shows. Some of you remarked that you like them, when I showed some of them previously. I hope you like this series.

    Hi Digirame,

Super set, especially like the Red one. Those were the days, it's good to see them like that when they're well looked after and restored.

    Dig,

    Thanks.

    Dig, or anyone else,

How do I avoid the whitish blob of the moon, and get nice sharp pictures? Is it atmospheric haze and I can't do anything about it?
Am I relying on autofocus too much and I should switch to manual focus?
Is it just a limitation of using a lens that just doesn't have enough reach?
    I'm frustrated.

    Hi Steve,
This article below is a pretty decent one to get you going on taking photos of the Moon. If you look at the second photo in the article you will see a photo similar to yours, which suits that type of photo as yours does. To get detail of the Moon your exposure needs to be reduced and the surroundings will end up black. As I said its not a bad article and will get you on the way. Good Luck.

    Mocha,

Thanks for the article. Unfortunately, I use an adblocker, and I can't read it. I'll look around though.

I did notice that when I spot metered on the moon one time, the moon looked sharper, but as you said, everything else was black.

    Nice dragonfly.

    Mocha,

Thanks. The red one does stand out and I did like that one a lot also. Did you notice the dark blue high performance bug in photo nos. 5 and 7? I wonder how fast that one goes. I saw one on YouTube that was modified to develop over 500 horsepower.

  • Sept. 24, 2023, 6:34 p.m.

    Steve,

Could you see detail on the moon with the naked eye? I note that there are thin clouds in the way.

If so, focus might have been the issue. Even spot focus is wide when it comes to a 0.5° object like the moon, and it seems to have selected the tree.

The other problem might be over exposure. I always expose the moon manually and run a series of values, choosing the one with most detail later. A time of 1/5 sec is hard to hold steady. In the absence of a tripod, I steady myself by leaning on something. You do need a focal length of 200mm minimum to get anything of interest.

Given all that, you have done pretty well! 😀

    Mocha,

Nene Park is a beautiful area. You show that again in photo no. 1. That's a nice close up of the bird. That ISO5000 image looks wonderful. Only once did I catch a dragonfly in flight. It kept flying around in the same general area and I took many "failures" until one was just right. Saying that, I appreciate your skill in capturing that. Ah, the heron...another great one. I keep looking for one that is close, but I haven't seen any yet recently. But eventually I will.

    Steve,

To answer your question about the moon.... It's hard to say, since there could be many variables. What I would recommend is to experiment with many different settings and lenses. Also clouds or atmospheric conditions could affect it, so take multiple pictures a few minutes apart. As David said, if you are using a very slow shutter speed without a tripod (or equivalent), brace yourself on something to minimize camera shake.

    Steve,

I liked the colored picture of the berries best. Red and green is perfect for Christmas, so save that one for the holidays. Maybe you could use it for a Christmas card.

I like this one best - great design, and you've captured it very well!

Great looking flower with nice muted tones!

Really well done shot and great atmosphere! I like the bird as well but the double lines in the bokeh (while not too pronounced) are a little bit distracting. I would definitely try to shoot that at f/5.6 if possible.

Even though it has very strong colors this works surprisingly welel in B&W - well done!
