    Hi JACS,

In the Heron photo the max opening on my Tamron 150-600 at 450mm is F6.3 the F stop I used was F7.1, a third of a stop. I happen to know where the sweet spots are on the lenses I use, all of them. I happen to know how fast my subject (the Heron) can move around the frame and to maximize the in focus shots I get at any one session. The photo below is from the same session.

Why not join us JACs on 'Your Canon Photos' and show us your endevours.

    Hi Digirame, Thank You.

It's a good time to be out at the moment, each day I'm seeing the change in the leaves and keeping my fingers crossed for some good autumn colours. I think they are horse chestnuts as you mentioned there was plenty on the ground split open. The squirrels must love this time of year.

Wonderful! Love the details and colors!

Fantastic shot and background! Often pays to try shooting from a low angle when it comes to photography... this is a perfect example!

So this lens is broken... to a degree, it won't be able to ever restore it. It's also one of a kind, (my assumption is) a prototype lens for what quite a few people I've talked to consider one of the best manual focus macro lenses ever made... So, of course I'm gonna use it. And I'll try to get some interesting results. Here's a still life, arranged with love by yours truly in 2 seconds 😅:

Of course it lacks contrast and detail and even the processing can't salvage more of the image quality, but I just love how it renders the background. Here's another one:

I know it's not everybody's thing to use broken lenses, but I like it, at least if they have, what I perceive to be some really interesting stories to tell...

Now for a capture of one of our rabbits, taken with another weird industrial (microfilm) lens:

Again, I'm pretty impressed by the image quality of this tiny 40-50 year old lens. If you head over to flickr and look at it at the highest magnification, you can probably see what I mean. Just to put things in perspective: this lens is 25 mm/1 inch in diameter and also in length.

    Steve,

Those are beautiful hydrangea flowers. I especially like the first photo.

    Steve,

You can read about rusty nails and hydrangea flowers on the internet. Some call it a horticultural myth, but since there is so much information about it, there might be a reason why rusty nails change the color to blue. It doesn't seem likely, but you may want to read more about it. That would be a good test for MythBusters, except I think they had finished that series of shows. 😀

    Steve,

I think the clouds would look better if there were more contrasts between dark clouds and white clouds. I like dramatic scenes of clouds just before a downpour of rain.

I like it when you take us on your hikes. You have beautiful forested areas. Are the mushrooms edible?

    Simplejoy,

I like the autumn colors. That's a cute bunny rabbit. 😀 I'm glad you like to experiment with older lenses, to see what images you can get. It would be neat to see a comparison between them and the more modern lenses with similar settings and conditions etc.

    Mocha,

I know you are an experienced photographer that shows exceptionally nice photos. In regards to the heron picture and seeing JACS comment, I don't know if changing the F-stop to F6.3 would have helped much. You were faced with a background that was unavoidable. Also with wildlife, they can move around too much and too fast and sometimes we only have a few seconds to change the settings while capturing the moment. With such distracting background elements (that is, the vegetation), we can either try to have a greater depth of field by reducing the focal length and using something like F10 so the plants in the background are sharp. Other times, we like blurry backgrounds but that only happens when the conditions are just right. Since I know you from years of seeing your pictures, I know that you know that. I'm so glad you enjoy using the Tamron 150-600mm lens. Mine is still working well; I think it's been seven or eight years now.

Oh by the way, someone else who happen to walk by my computer just a few minutes ago saw the heron image, said "did you take that"? I replied "no". Then I heard "that was pretty amazing".

    Dunlin,

Thanks for noticing the hydrangea flower. They seem to grow well until the first freezing temperatures.
