This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

    ====================

This past week we had several photos from OpenCube, which always set me wondering how they started off and what they are intended to represent! (I guess I need to know the background that he refers to.) But please keep them coming -- one day the penny will drop!

Digirame took a trip to Portland, Oregon, and walked along the Willamette River, which winds its way up from south east of Eugene, eventually entering Canada. (I am finding it hard to think of another US river that runs from south to north.) Nice blue skies and curiously deserted streets.

His interpretation of Halloween/Thanksgiving reminds me that one advantage of Thanksgiving is that "commercial" Christmas does not start until it is over. Here, in central Europe, where Thanksgiving is not celebrated, "commercial" Christmas is already in full swing, with the lighting of trees and lights in the cities. I will show some of these later in the week.

Simplejoy has been active in making really good suggestions for the landing pages (thanks!), but found time to visit us with his bubble wrap photo.

Steve's cat looked happy to be photographed (at ISO 1600!) That's a different cat out mousing. Steve's trees are interesting, but I'd like to know what the color polarizer does. He moved on to his ND filter photos: different! I like the way he is going back to basic principles.

I look forward to seeing your photos of how the holiday season is prepared for in your part of the world.

    David

    Subject: Autumn Colors

Near where I take pictures of the wood ducks, there's this particular spot that I like to capture the autumn colors. I hope you like them.

    Subject: Low ISO

In regards to the discussion that David and Steve had about using low ISO levels, I'm completely in agreement with David about experimenting. I have always said, to give it your best with what settings you feel are appropriate. Then experiment after that (if you can). Try "crazy" aperture settings like F18 and high ISO's like ISO12800, particularly if you have reasons for using them. Today, I took some pictures of two teenage boys on skateboards. I was lucky that 1/125th of a second was fast enough to freeze the action (it was getting dark in late afternoon). I used F9 and 55mm FL, so I would have everything reasonably sharp (that is, a deep depth of field). The ISO level was 6400. Yes, if a person pixel peeked the image, you would see that the faces were a little soft, but it was that or a photo with motion blur. In this case, I guessed correctly for this candid street photo. I didn't have time to experiment with different settings. But if I had a stationary object like a bird in a tree, then I would try different things. That is, unless I forgot. 😏

Feel free to add your own comments about the settings that you have had to choose, that were outside your own comfort zone.

    Dig,

    The dinosaurs...

    How totally, awesomely cool.

In pictures 6, 7, and 8... Is that a hatched egg in the middle? That's a very clever way by the artists of conveying time.

@Digirame do like the autumn photos, Only thing I might have done when processing these photos would be add just a bit more color.
Do like the "Jurassic park" photos 😁

After a busy week and bad weather we finally did get out again for a hike. We thought it would be a reasonable nice day.
It turned out to be a day with a bit of sun, rain some sun again and more rain...... But nevertheless a enjoyable hike😄
We did take only a small selection of our gear with us.
I wanted to test the repaired 24-70 a bit more, got it back a about two weeks ago.

    Photobygms,

Thanks. We have had a strange warm autumn this year and I have may missed "peak colors". In past years the colors popped more. But with a little processing, I see that there's an improvement like this for the last image. All of them should improve with post processing. I just thought I would do one of them, but will do all of them if someone wants.

    Subject: Autumn Colors Revision 1

Instead of just editing my photos to increase color saturation in my autumn colors, I thought I would just re-do them so you could see the difference. The first set was as I saw them. But this set is how I have seen them in past years and it's better. Thanks Photobygms for noting that.

    Photobygms,

That's great you were able to get out for a hike and didn't let the rain stop you. I'm glad you got your lens repaired. I like seeing all of those leaves in the third photo. It's a good thing that we don't have to rake them up. 😀 Now where I live, we use leaf blowers more. I use an electric leaf blower and rakes. The gas (petrol) leaf blowers are too noisy and I just read recently that they are highly toxic. I suppose that's because there's no air pollution devices on them. But anyway, if we don't have to rake the leaves up, it's enjoyable walking though them as we hear them crunch beneath our feet. That's a nice part of autumn that we don't have in any other season. 😀

    Simplejoy,

Thanks. That's a good question; the dinosaurs are smaller than actual sizes. The two dinosaurs from photo no. 2 were probably about six to seven feet (two meters) high. I was not able to size them with any people, because it was in a restricted area (on the other side of a fence).
