Your Canon Photos No. 33: 17th to 23rd December 2023

This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

Review of Last Week

As a city dweller, I participated last week with some pictures of the holiday lights.

Mocha was in the country, with beautiful frosty weather, with one of his pictures containing an almost hidden dog! All very bracing.

Digirame showed a plethora of assorted, and -- to me -- exotic, duck portraits, and then moved on to night shots with his new RP. He is also exploring the HDR settings fruitfully. He showed interesting views of the flooding in Oregon, which I hope has retreated by now.

Steve was also experimenting with HDR -- it seems to be the flavour of the month!

Photobygms' panorama of Loch Shiel is wonderful when viewed at full size.

There was a lot of interesting discussion of Canon models and processing software. This latter seems to be part and parcel of the process with current cameras.

My phone promises sun and above freezing temperatures here in the first few days of the week. I hope it is not lying, as I should like to take advantage of the nice weather and get out of the city, which is clogged with tourists and Christmas shoppers...

Now here's my story, I'm the one that carries all my lenses in a rucksack come rain or shine, this day it was raining hard and we were visiting Chatsworth House and I knew I would only need my 10-18mm Lens. Where we were camped it was a 20min walk to the house so we set off with my camera and lens tucked in my weatherproof, we walked through the grounds and what do I see......

In your last picture, what are the brown things along one side of the table? They look like a type of stool? I wonder how comfortable they were to sit on for a long period of time. (or maybe the idea was to discourage people from staying too long). 😀

The "little panorama" is interesting. Were you going to stitch some of them together?

I know what you mean...I think about that also if I don't include another lens. For example, last night when I was out taking pictures at night with my Canon RP camera, I didn't think I would need a telephoto lens, but I brought with me my Canon M50 Mark II with the 55-200mm lens just in case. Another example: There's times I'm taking pictures of wildlife with the Tamron lens and I most always carry with me another camera with a wide/normal lens to catch rainbows or sunsets etc. We never know....

Your indoor photos are excellent at such high ISO levels. Did you take these RAW and then use your software to make them look so nice? That's what you said you had been doing for some of them. Well, whatever you did, you did a great job.

Subject: HDR Photos At Night

In a continuation of a discussion of the "blue" buildings I took. Please understand that I'm trying to learn how to better use this camera first before doing any software manipulation or major adjustments. The only things I may adjust at this time are some minor straightening, lighting, mild cropping and then resizing etc. for web use. I would like to see the results I get straight out of the camera. I've only had this new full frame camera for eleven days. I estimate that I need at least a minimum of 3 months more with the Canon RP to feel comfortable with it. I know when I switched from using a DSLR camera to mirrorless (my Canon M50 Mark II), it took me at least that long.

So part of my experimentation is to use HDR on these buildings at night. A person may like these or not, but again...it's a little arty...this is only what I know about this camera now. Later I may do things differently. I hope you enjoy seeing the progress that I'm making. I encourage you all to do the same, to push the boundaries with your own gear. I would love to see them.

Photo No. 3 - I had fun playing around with the in-camera HDR at night; I hope you like seeing another street scene. This is only one version that I could take. There are many more. So consider it at this time, some of my early experimentation. Take note that this is at ISO32000 and all of these images are hand-held.

This is interesting in a different kind of way. It's almost like the opposite of panning where the subject is "frozen" and the background is blurred.
Here, the subject is blurred and the background is frozen.

For this particular experiment, I had to lower my shutter speed to 1/40, because of the dim interior lighting and my ISO was already maxed out at 12800..
The ball has all but disappeared in front of the leg of the table in the last of the three shots

I'm going to have to try this outside sometime when the lighting is better. You can imagine a child or dog running, or a bicyclist set against a brighter background where the subject really stands out.

I also need to kick it up to high speed continuous of 7 frames per second instead of low speed of 3 frames per second, where the shots of the subject would be closer together.

So, did you stack these three images together? How did you do that? Yes, it would be nice to see what you are showing on something outside, that is highly visible.

In November I was able to view a Christmas tree lighting. It was nice, other than the rain. When I received my Canon RP, I went back there quite some time later and took a few more photos. So I included two of them here at the end.

It's a tradition in the UK for the Children to hang up a sock by the fireplace, then Santa comes along and fills the sock with presents.

My guess is that everyone would go horseriding before lunch on Christmas day then they would change one saddle for another at the table. 😀

I only ever take RAW files because I like the development process back on the computer and especially now that I can clean up the noise in the images.

I like the Christmas Tree Lighting, Photo 5 of the choir is super as is Photo 6 of the tree, the rain definitely adds to the atmosphere of the night.

@Digirame I think the night OOC HDRs look good.

No, I didn't stack them.

You take a moving subject (preferably moving parallel to you) and take a couple of quick shots. Don't move your camera, so that the frame remains stable, and is sharp and in focus.

You can freeze the motion, or deliberately introduce motion blur by slowing down your shutter speed. The latter works best, I think, because it introduces the idea of motion, and it looks like your subject is moving through the frame.

Then you stitch them together using a regular panorama stitching program. I personally use Autostitch because it's simple. You crop out the center to remove any distortions on the sides.
