This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

    =========================

    Review of Last Week

Steve opened the gallery with a joke: "Little panorama". He continued to turn things inside out with his second panorama. His negative space was also "different". Later, or perhaps earlier, he caught some interesting cloud formations a few mornigns ago. Living here, where the skies are totally overcast on many days, the cloud patterns were very welcome.

Mocha went to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. I was amazed how many people go there st this time of year, but then, the weather did remind me of the end of August! Very nice indoor shots in what are rather cramped spaces.

I agree with him about shooting raw and post processing. Most cameras and lenses are designed today with the expectation that this is how they will be exploited to the full. I also enjoy doing it, without needing to spend hours doing so.

Digirame showed us a mural. I know from experience that getting the perspective of these right is not easy. This one was excellent!

Later he covered the Christmas tree lighting where he lives, followed by more night shots for the RP, then a quick segue into October with planes. He certainly has that subject material down, though photo No.3 might have benefitted from a slightly longer exposure to show more propeller rotation.

And more night time shots. It's a little too cold for that here. Yes! We have to watch out for those mobile phone cameras: quality is increasing all the time.

He is doing interesting experiments to exploit his RP: his HDR photos are getting even better, though I think the "blue" building need an even wider angle lens, also by day! What is that building, by the way?

The sun shone here the day before the shortest day, so I was able to notice that the noonday sun was only at an angle of 30° above the horizon. On the day itself we had total cloud cover; but let me make up for that with a photo taken on the shortest day in 2004 at 3:56pm in Michigan on December 21st.

    PICT2331a.jpg

Photobygms must be very healthy, spending so much time in the open air in all weathers. The results he captures for us make the trips worthwhile also.

I look forward to seeing what you present this week and wish all who participate in these threads, whether as photographers, or as audience, very Happy Holidays, whatever, wherever and however you celebrate!

    David,

The "blue" buildings location is at the Orenco Station. It's one of the stations where people can get on and off the light rail train, west of Portland, Oregon. It's also close to the location where I found a Christmas parade. I'll show those parade photos next.

The light rail tracks are very close by. I could have stood closer to the tracks, so I could have gotten a different perspective. Maybe some day I'll do that.

    Subject: Christmas Parade

I had heard about a Christmas Parade near the Orenco Station. I prepared for the cold weather and with my new Canon RP camera, I attempted to see what I could get in very low light at this parade. I was pleased with the pictures, compared to what I could get with the Canon T7i or Canon M50 Mark II cameras. I took these photos at the staging area, where they were not moving. Later they moved too fast along the route, so it was difficult without much higher ISO levels.

    David,

That's nice to see your shortest-day-of-the-year photo. That looks cold; it reminds me of when I lived in Colorado.

Subject: Portland, Oregon HDR Building Photos

A few days ago, I was in Portland, Oregon. I had a chance to take some more HDR photos of buildings at night (in-camera). I experimented with different settings. All of these are hand-held. I found if I used too short of a shutter speed, the images would turn out a little soft. I waited until there was no motion. A few times, a person or car moved so you might notice that motion blur.

From my camera, these were taken as "Art Standard". Later I'll try the setting of "Natural". I selected "Auto" for the "Adjust dyn range". The other choices are plus or minus 1 EV, plus or minus 2 EV and plus or minus 3 EV.

So I hope you like these as being art, creating something extraordinary; something we normally would not be able to see with our eyes. Note that this is just me playing with the camera and I'm sharing it with you. It's a learning process. I like to push boundaries and go outside standard norms. If you are able and would like to do this also, please join me in creating HDR photos with either software or your cameras.

About HDR, I do like normal looking HDR, not overdone so to say 😄
But sometimes the subject/object in the photo needs a overdone HDR.
I actually have an older photo that I created in HDR and went a bit over the top 😂
We hiked to the famous Solheimasandur Plane Wreck in Iceland in 2017 while visiting Iceland
Drove the ring road "Hringvegur " and many inland F roads with a 4x4

    Gear used:
    Canon Eos 80D - Canon EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
Three photos (in raw) with exposure compensation setting -3, 0 and +3 and merged them in DPP with the HDR compositing tool (alt Y)
    And this came out :

Cool parade photos Digirame. Around here we have the "Santa Bus" - an open roofed double decker bus completely covered with lights. It drives slowly round neighbourhoods at night, music playing, Santa on top. (It's a fundraiser for charity). I don't have any worthwhile photos of it, but I'll try to share a video of it later today.

    This is my favourite one.

    Photobygms,

Thanks for sharing with us your Solheimasandur plane wreck HDR photo. That looks neat. I assumed you took that during the part of the day where there was very little light. I read that everyone survived on that plane crash. Apparently (from what I read), the pilot thought he ran out of fuel, but he switched to the wrong fuel tank.

    Dunlin,

Thanks. I'm glad you liked the parade photos. It's difficult to take them in low light, as you can see by noticing the high ISO levels. The Canon T7i and Canon M50 Mark II would have made satisfactory photos also, but I don't believe they would have looked as nice (from past experience using them). I'm looking forward to seeing your video of the double decker bus.

Next, I'll have to try some "Natural" HDR photos, rather than the "Art Standard" to see what they would look like. I like that the camera does all of this, so I have zero involvement with HDR post processing. 😀 I tried it once with software and it just didn't look right and it took me too long, "fiddling" with it by trying different things. Now I can create these in about 3 seconds each with the camera. I think that's the natural progression of this camera technology. They are going to get smarter and smarter, just like the smartphones.

    Digi,

The plane photo was not mine: Photbygms posted it. 😀

Your Portland HDR Building Photos: I like the shots but the "Art Standard" HDR is just too much for me. I cant explain why, but the colours just seem unnatural -- they remind me of 1950s magazines!

    Sorry! (Keep experimenting, though...)

    David,

Thanks for your comments about the HDR photos. I have a tendency to like things that are more natural, but I liked this "art" also. I've got many more photos that I've taken, that I'll also share. This winter we have had not so much rain, so I've been able to get out more.

    Digi,

These look much more natural, and I cant see how HDR would improve them.

Have you tried the night scene mode?

The starlings didn't leave this year. By now, they should have flown south when cold weather came.

In recent days, we have seen flies and even a couple of honey bees. That is not good.

I'm afraid we are in for a long, hot summer.

When you see puffy, little clouds like this, a storm will hit within 24 hours.

Sure enough, it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

Thanks. I have not tried night scene mode. That's a good idea...thanks for mentioning that...probably should try it and see...

    Steve,

I like seeing the starlings when they fly off together like that from the trees. It's impressive when we can catch them like that. Yes, we have had a warm autumn and winter also. It's only gotten below freezing a few times and not by much.

We have the same situation; we are expecting on and off rainstorms all week. But we don't get the same warning as you all get with puffy little clouds.

    Hi Digirame,

The 'Art' ones definitely look different, it's good that you are experimenting with all the presets, that way you know the ones that work for you and the ones that don't. Nice set.
