This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

    =====================

    Review of last week

Lots of fascinating pictures from Digirame of the local Christmas parade -- a very American thing! He has continued with his HDR series, this week in Portland. The "Art Standard" setting produced results that were little unreal, but later ones with the "Natural" setting were more successful in terms of colour rendering. I wonder if "Art Standard" works better by day or in other conditions. It certainly worked for the landscape scenes.

Photobygms contributed an HDR image of a wrecked airplane, which looked very surreal.

Steve seems to have been innundated with starlings. As I recall, these are noisy birds; but the pics were fascinating. His photo of 2022 snow was excellent from all angles. And then the crows arrived! I wonder what attracts them. I see very few birds here in the big city. Time to take a trip...

Dunlin found sheep eating turnips and produce convincing evidence of this for us. We certainly learn something new here every week!

Mocha took a winter walk along his canal, with wonderfully atrmospheric photos along the way.

Ghundred, whom we have missed around here for a while, was photographing cars in what looked like warm weather.

I felt in need of a bike ride, and went on the Donau Insel. I confess that I cheated, as it was pitch black where I was, and that, combined with the need to underexpose by 2 stops to avoid burnout by the lights, may have been the explanation for the artefacts that Simplejoy noted. But I looked at the before- and after-processing files and, though PhotoLab applied a lot of noise reduction, I am pretty sure that the patterns in the river were caused by the high wind at the time.

Simplejoy's transformation of common objects from unusual angles never ceases to amaze me.

The pictures that you have created in 2023 are on an extremely high level of excellence. I have personally learned a lot from the interaction with the group and I hope others have. 2024 beckons and I am sure you will all meet the challenge of rising to even greater heights.

A Happy New Year to you all!

    David

I took my usual Friday afternoon walk around the city and, though the weather was dreary and damp, found some new things to photograph.

For some reason, pavement art is not common in Vienna. This man pulled quite a crowd in Kärntnerstrasse, which was full of tourists, and I hope they were generous.

    L1010357_DxO-b.jpg

Next I came across carol singers. I havent seen this in the city before. I think they were from the Ukraine, as they were singing beautifully The Carol of the Bells, which comes from there. The lady on the left was playing the bells vigorously!

    L1010361_DxO-b.jpg

Then I passed through Michaelerplatz (the church may be familiar to you from an earlier photo). This is one of the two places where the horses feed and rest from pulling tourists in their Fiaker during the day.

    L1010367_DxO-b.jpg

Eventually I reached my destination, which was the Volksgarten, where most the roses that I photographed in June are covered in sackcloth to protect them from any freezing weather. Those in the foreground have been vigorously pruned and are presumably protected from cold winds by the hedge. So far the winter has been mild -- 13°C/55°F today, but January and February are still to come! The trees were cut back quite vigorously last winter and the new growth is evident. One can glimpse the Rathaus through the trees, and part of the Burgtheater on the right.

    Subject: Cormorant

On the day I was looking for wood ducks I spotted this cormorant. The bird was standing on something in the middle of the pond. Since I could not move closer to the cormorant without getting into the water, the last two images were cropped. I just love seeing that blue eye! The sun was just getting ready to set; that's why there is the shadow we see in the lower half of the first two pictures. I lost the sun about ten minutes later, so I was happy that I got these ones.

    David,

I like seeing these from you. We occasionally will have chalk art on our sidewalks for special occasions. I liked seeing the smile in the second photo. Seeing the horse drawn carriage is neat. We have something like that at South Lake Tahoe for the tourists. That's interesting that the roses are covered like that. I didn't know that was done that way tor them.

@Digirame. nice ones, but not in their typical behavior, standing with spread wings 😁

    Photobygms,

Thanks. Yes, you are right about the spread wings. I suppose the cormorant had already dried the wings by the time I got there.

    This pecan tree fascinates me.

    It's lines and its shapes...

    Steve,

I like how you highlighted the pecan tree with the oval shape that surrounds it. How did you do that?

    Dig,

It's in Irfanview. Click on the Image tab. It's abiut third option down or so. It's called, Shapes and Borders, I think.
That particular border is called, "Elipse".

I kind of like it. While the tree is straight, if you look at it closely, it appears as though the border itself is cocked slightly to one side, almost like a drawing on a plate that is standing on its rim and facing slightly away from you
Makes the picture almost three dimesional.

    Hi guys
A couple of pics post Christmas pre new year.
We were at a picnic at a national Park for a catch-up with some friends and we had a local visitor.

Later I went for a walk on one of the tracks.

    Paul,

I just read about the Goanna. I hadn't heard about that type of lizard. It grows to over 4 feet long. The bird is beautifully captured with the surroundings.

The best wishes for everybody 👍

We decided to go out for a short hike to start this new year fresh😄
We started with a few drops of rain but de did see the sun again.
Visited the Balloërveld nature reserve, a reserve very close to our home and did enjoy this hike.
Decided to go as light a possible with only our Eos R and one of our Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM lenses.

    Photobygms,

That's great you were able to get outside without the rain and go for a walk. Your photograph of the rainbow is a beauty. You caught the sun rays perfectly too. What a great way to spend your time on the first day of the year! 😀

    Happy New Year! 😀

Subject: Canon M50 Mark II HDR Photo

Hi all. For the 1st day of the year I went out taking pictures with four cameras, the T7i, 800D, M50 MkII and the RP. I tried out a few in-camera HDR photos from the Canon M50 MkII. Here's one of them that has been modified by an auto feature during post processing. It's starting to look like a cell phone image. 😀 I'm just doing it for fun. I encourage you all to do the same...just have fun with your cameras.

    Happy New Year again.😀

With using the Canon M50 Mark II HDR mode, I cannot control the shutter speed, ISO or aperture. It's done automatically from the camera. I can do that on the Canon RP when using the in-camera HDR mode.

The goannas will mostly leave you alone as long as you don't come between them and food
