This thread is principally intended for you to show others the photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, ASP-C, film, etc. BUT, because you may have the opportunity of taking an outstanding picture when you do not have a Canon camera with you, all brands of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your photos.

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we hope that all will join in and comment on others' photos. As I am sure we all see it, this is more about community building and sharing than showing off. The response over the first three weeks has been most encouraging.

Lovely photos last week -- thanks! I have unfortunately had other preoccupations, but I would like to comment on the great variety and successful execution in last week's gallery.

Dunlin's different coloured trees are a good proof that great pictures are not taken by the camera, but by the photographer's eyes, which have to see the possibilities for the camera to capture.

I guess if we are bragging about our domestic pets, I shall need to select a photo of our dog.

And Sandy's evocative photos of her Japanese tour... I have never been there, so thank you for sharing them: they are beautiful photos that convey the sense of being there.

Then Fotoword's snakes and crocodile, all artfully posed. (I must admit I also follow the Australian rule for snakes.)

Simplejoy's lily-like flowers are beautifully composed and photographed: proof that we dont always need the full range from very light to very dark for a successful photo. More flowers from HessleHiker, who is lucky to have room to grow them, and Mocha entering the rose "competition".

A robin and other little birds from Digrame remind me that while I often hear them in our yard, I can never see them! Then the almost vertical take off jet from Digirame. I can imagine that a lot of patience (and luck) went into getting that shot. The same is true of Ray' photo of the tern. Magnificent!

The panorama Steve did fooled me: I failed to detect the differences in exposure. I have tried my hand at those myself and know that taking them is not as simple as one might expect. My little Sony Rx100 stitches them in camera for me, which helps.

The great thing is not that photos are being posted; but that they are being looked at and commented on. Many thanks to all. If I missed mentioning anyone, I apologise; it is not intentional. I enjoyed all the photos.

One nice thing about this thread is that it encourages me to get out and about with my camera. Yesterday I decided to visit the close-by Prater funfair and took only my 16mm lens. It was not suitable for everything I shot, of course; but I find it a good discipline to carry only one focal length. Here are some shots that I think were successful.

The famous Riesenrad (giant wheel), which in its original form was erected in 1897. I took this from outside the funfair because of the angle of the sun at 5pm. You can just see the waxing moon at the top of the pictures.

Inside the funfair (free entry!), if you look at the numbers on the cabins, it is evident that there were originally thirty of them. The wheel was extensively damaged in WW-II and when repaired it was considered safer to omit every other cabin. (The full story is found in the German version of the Wikipedia entry. If, like me, you didnt do German at school, you can paste the text into Google translate!)

There are many other excellent photos of this famous landmark; but I just wanted to prove that I had been there yesterday!

On the way back I came across some roses. Lots of buds, so worth a return trip. But for now this will continue our sub-theme.

I enjoyed seeing the famous Riesenrad Ferris wheel. I like seeing the blue sky. Your rose is lovely too. That takes discipline to use only one focal length. That means often instead of zooming in or out, we have to get closer or further away. In another words, we have to create our own zoom (so to speak).

Subject: Before the Air Show

Before the air show last weekend I was able to capture two photos of planes flying overhead. They usually fly over our towns in preparation for the event.

Photo No. 1 - I was a little surprised that the depth of field was good on this one using F7.1.

Well, my real reason for taking only one (or two) lenses with me is that it saves lugging around too much gear that doesnt get used! But you are right: it is the best way to discover the strengths and weaknesses of the particular focal length.

Here are a couple more shots from yesterday. You need to expand them to see the interesting detail.

Most of the rides are too scary for me, including the two below.

The first, in the centre of the picture, goes up to a great height, while the people on it rotate around the pole. There is another ride on the left, of which one can see only part: the people on the ends rotate in the other plane... Also on the left is a statue of a magician who seems to have had some connection with the funfair. Quite by chance, I see that a couple of birds got in the shot (right).

I took a photos of the magician, Basilio Calafati, about whom little is known, other than he was active in the Prater in the 19th century:

And another ride. This is a kind of merry go round with swings that rotate. This one is hard to photograph, due to its position.

This last shot is a heavy crop. I need to go back with a longer lens...

Subject: Last Friday's Air Show

Last weekend we had three air shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I went to all three of them. I was not originally planning to go to the Friday event (that is, inside the fenced enclosure). I only brought one camera and lens with me. I was just going to take a few snaps outside the airport. But later I decided to go inside anyway. So, there you have it, with one camera and lens I did what I could.

Photo No. 1 - Since it was late in the evening, I had to hurry up and take as many pictures as I could. You can see these three planes again in the next photo, where I zoomed in.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that the Friday air show is only in the late afternoon and evening. So, that's why I normally do not attend that event at the airport at that time. But the pictures are different, so that made it interesting for me.

Eventually the sun had set and it was time for me to go home.

I thought that this was your best picture. It not only combines motion and stillness, but tells a story in the process, of what awaits the plane on the ground. What's up in the sky is his future.

I'm glad you liked Photo No. 10. I have other air show pictures that I most likely will show later, but none were like this one. In the future, I'll have to consider more of these types of pictures.

Maybe there are eight leading lines to the vanishing point. How many do you see? Ah yes...rag weed...I'm not sure if ragweed gave me allergies in Colorado where I lived. At least I always blamed it on ragweed, but it could have been any plant.
