Your Canon Photos No. 42: 18th to 24th February 2024

This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

Review of last week

Photobygms found four legged animals on his walk this week, and sensibly kept a respectful distance with the RF24-240mm lens.

Steve took interesting "random shots" in much better weather, and also branched out into raw files. Keep them coming!

Digirame encountered a "dust bunny" and dealt with it successfully. Then it was back to the ducks -- an unusual type (hooded merganser), followed by a more familiar mallard doing feather maintenance.

Simplejoy continued to push the envelope and entertained us with his unusual angles on everyday things and his creative titles.

Dunlin told us about Darktable. I will check it out when I have time. He also showed distinct signs of spring, which has not quite sprung here yet. I havent seen frog spawn since I was a child!

In Vienna we had a little bit of sun on two days, tempered by dark clouds and strong shadows due to the sun being still low in the sky. I also provided some light entertainment in the form of the expensive station clock that keeps bad time -- just as well that it cannot be seen -- and I cheated with a photo of a photo for more light relief, and tried unsuccessfully to capture the moon and Jupiter by hand. I am beginning to discover the relative strengths of my Q3 and the R6. Briefly, if you have the right lens on the Canon and dont need to crop much, it gives great results, though it is heavier than the Leica, and I always seem to have the wrong lens with me! On the other hand, although the Leica is a fixed 28mm, it has three times as many MPs, and quite severe cropping can be very acceptable.

There were some interesting exchanges of ideas and tips. Please keep these coming and we can learn from each other.

Subject: Busy Today

I have been very busy today. I did take pictures at a people event and then visited a nearby University. Here's one of those photos that I took in the rain with an umbrella. I have hundreds more photos to sort through...wish me luck..it's going to take some time. So you may not hear from me for a few days, but I will comment on your photos. I missed commenting on a few photos at the end of last week, but I did see them and appreciate the value you bring for all of us with your discussions.

This was a soccer game at this University that I saw, that in Europe is called football. With the colorful umbrellas you can see this evidence of the rainfall. I especially went there to take pictures of the food cart robots that they have at that University. I'll show those later.

Today we have as usual lately a lot of rain again. Luckily I went out for a hike yesterday 😉
It was a grey cloudy day but i didn't have rain. I went for a solo hike, my better half does have some issues with one of the heels and the tendons. She will have to minimize load on that heel/foot and hikes are for now a no go.
I loaded some gear and other things(food, water etc) for a longer hike in a backpack and visited Dwingelderveld National Park again.
Didn't bring any swim gear or wellington boots, But I almost should have 😐 Many sections of the Hiking trail were little ponds. But with a pair of well maintained Hanwag (gore-tex) trekking/alpine boots I did keep my feet dry while crossing those spots.

But I also was getting tired so not the best photos, I did just hit the button and hoped for the best :

"Faces I Can't Remember"

Thanks for the reply. The umbrella I use is huge, so much that it also keeps my feet dry. When I approach people, they seem amused at it. The way I take pictures with the umbrella, is that I use the tilt screen, so all I have to do is look down towards it. I don't have to use the viewfinder. I hold the camera and umbrella together somehow like that with the hands. The wrist strap is attached to my camera, in case I drop it. It's not a perfect system. It would be better I think if I would have something on my belt, so I can attach the umbrella shaft to it. That would help keep it all more steady and easy to use. Right now I sometimes put the shaft in a camera bag or pocket. Also sometimes I let the top part of the umbrella rest on my head. If you find something better that works, please let me know. It's so nice to not let the weather stop us from being outdoors and taking pictures.

Thanks. I almost have finished with the pictures on the Canon RP. I have two more cameras to go. I just came over here to see how you all are doing. I'll keep working away, and will be back maybe today or tomorrow.

As promised last month, a shot of the clock on the local station from outside -- it is still 45 minutes fast! This is the most of it that one can see from the ground, and when the tree is in leaf, it is further obscured.

I enjoyed seeing your photos. They remind me so much of where we live in Oregon. It's raining now. I'm glad you decided to take some photos of the deer, regardless of whether you were in the best position to do so. Sometimes as I'm sure you know, they can make it so difficult for us by hiding behind branches. That's too bad your wife is having some tendon/foot issues. I've thought about that (and we all should think about that) that when we get older we may not be able to be as mobile. That's where using a push stroller for someone would be an option, but a lot of us may not want to do that. I remember when I sprained my ankle one time severely while looking for a heron on a slippery slope. Fortunately the treatment for that, was to keep walking slowly (but not to run on it). It took three weeks to heal. The beetle looks like an insect that we would call a "stink bug". If you disturbed it, it would let out a smell. My favorite photo (as someone pointed out) is the one with the path under the trees. That's the fifth one. I like seeing all of that water too in the other photos under dark cloudy skies. I've got similar photos of some minor flooding or pools of water as you have shown. Ah, and you also have a lonely bench. 😀

The "Faces I Can't Remember" photo is bright and colorful. It immediately caught my attention. I see the face in the center, slightly at the top and to the right. There might be another face to the right of that, a little lower. How did you create the picture?

I see the clock is partially obscured. Yes, that looks like a bad design.

The "outside the place" picture looks like possibly a nice park. But somehow it appears modified some, to be a little different than what is natural. What did you do to make that image?

What would you suggest that David do, to improve the picture with the clock? I think it could be straightened a little (just slightly). Plus I'm wondering if a HDR process would make this better, when the sky is bright and the building is dark. I'd also like to see the part of the building at ground level too, with people walking in and out of the doors. What's nice about people being in an image, is that help dimension the other parts of the picture. The person or people can be small; that's OK...it gives us that size perspective. For me, I'd like to see it being more colorful if that's possible (but may not be).

Subject: Bicycles

I finally finished going though my hundreds of pictures today. These are ones that I took this past weekend on Friday and Saturday.

Here's one that I took while it was raining that stands out alone (different than the photos I often show in a series). I took this at the University in Corvallis, Oregon (where the soccer game was being played). What's neat about taking pictures in the rain is that you can sometimes find those reflections as you can see. I'd like to see your photos too that you took under these conditions. They can turn out especially good. I've got tons more that I'll share later. I just need a break from all of that post processing on the computer.
