Your Canon Photos No. 47: 24th to 30th March 2024

This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

Review of last week

Only one page of photos this last week. I am hoping that our usual members are in good health and merely preoccupied with other things!

I kicked off with a return to the interesting building I found earlier in the month. I was not totally happy with my new result for two reasons: the narrowness of the street made it impossible to get any real perspective on the five-storey building. This meant that the side decoration was not visible, as it was in the earlier photo, and the effect of the overhanging top of the building was lost. It is, however, a remarkable design, though I havent been able to decode the meaning of many of the symbols used to decorate the left and right hand edges. These clearly had significance for Wihelm Stiassny the designer, who lived in the building between 1901 and 1910, the years of Jugendstil.

Digirame's spring is well advanced and gave him the opportunity to show a variety of beautiful blossoms in full bloom. The moon even obliged for him during the day.

Dunlin also produced beautiful blossoms, and showed us that the free to use Darktable program is well worth investigating for processing of raw files. He also caught a bee in action

Later in the week I took the train and a long tram ride to an appointment on the outskirts of Vienna, and found things I dont normally encounter. Another trip to the Mazda dealership produced pictures of the Mickey Mouse special edition Vespa scooter (!) and shots of the Hauptbahnhof/shopping mall.

And that was it folks for this last week -- apart from interesting comments and a brief discussion of Darktable. I shall probably not be able to photograph much this week, so we rely on YOU!

Subject: Sellwood Bridge

Last month I had a chance to take pictures of the Sellwood Bridge which crosses the Willamette River. I took a number of photos, with and without the train. Also the sunlight kept changing (with partially cloudy skies) and I experimented with taking these with the telephoto lens with the intention of keeping everything sharp. I hope you like this variety. Which ones would be your favorite?

There are cranes all over this city. This shows how they stop them falling over, and erect them, despite the narrow streets. The base is large concrete blocks keyed to the sidewalks on either side of the street, on which is bolted a heavy steel frame, to which the crane vertical is attached. The base of the crane has concrete weights on top of it. Up top, the horizontal section is balanced. How the operator gets up there is a mystery.

Incomplete EXIF data because I used my non-automatic 12mm Laowa lens at f/8.

Today I was fortunate enough to be able to visit a butterfly farm again.
I feel like I did better photographically last time, but I still got some pleasing shots.
Shot as RAW, processed in darktable.

Cool photo.
Currently we have four cranes clustered together, and at night they are lit up, each a different colour.

I don't currently have a photo, but I'll see what I can do.
Mean while, this photo is of the same cranes. It was taken in August 2022.

The daffodils are still doing well here.

This 100% crop shows that one of them is actually white! I hope it feels special, rather than a misfit!

Hello everyone,

I just wanted you all to know that I just got back from the hospital. I had a sudden non-life threatening event. I went into the emergency room on Sunday morning. I had the attack on Saturday night right after I submitted my pictures (it was not heart problems). I was in pain but I wanted to be dedicated.😀 I know that was probably not wise, but my decision already was made. Plus I didn't want to have anything done at night at the hospital as I was so tired. I had minimal invasive surgery. I had two surgeries. I don't want to discuss the details of course, but just to let you know that I'm fine. I just have to watch for infections. Could one of you reply to each person's photos until I get "more on my feet". Replying doesn't mean critique necessarily unless a person asks for it. Anyway that's the way I do it. The reason I don't critique usually (or try not to) as I recognize that viewing each person's art is subjective. What you like or what I like may be different. Plus I try to understand sometimes why the person took the photo. Sometimes it may be not as interesting to me or us, but to the person it might have be something special to them, like a place they visited as child etc. So the important thing to just reply and acknowledge them for their pictures. For me, it's so nice to see everyone's images especially on an international forum. We get to travel without a plane ticket. 😀

I might as well let you all know one more thing. The reason I don't hit the "Like" button is I don't want to show favoritism. If I was requested to do that, then you all would get my "Likes" 100 percent. 😀 I like that you are showing images, so that's the reasoning for it. If I made any typos please let me know. It's been a rough four days. I tried to be careful with the typing. I'm in not much pain. Again, I just have to watch infections. I'm a little bit of a health nut and am very active physically, so I don't anticipate any other health problems soon (hopefully). But as we get older, anything can happen no matter how hard we try. It's our earthly experience to learn and grow. 😀 Keep posting!!! 😀

Or maybe I should always hit the Like button. What do you all think? I really appreciate what you guys do. 😀

Thanks. I'm just resting trying to not involve myself in too many things. I live a busy life; that's why I post so many photos. But they are only a tiny fraction of what I actually take. It's been a fun hobby for me. You get exercise walking around looking for things.

I hope you liked my idea about a bird feeder. Do you remember on Dpreview the fellow that would show pictures of birds that came to his feeder in his backyard? Did he live in Ohio? He got a tremendous amount of beautiful pictures without traveling far. I took another picture of that bird feeder at our local wetlands, as I was thinking of you. I would do that also (take more pictures of small birds), but you can see how busy I have been with the variety. Spring is a wonderful time to find flowers too. I love this season.

I am sorry to hear of your medical emergency; but glad that it is under control and you are doing well. Infections are not nice: I have myself been plagued by them in the past six months. Keep away from them, and all the best for a speedy recovery!

As you know, I do use the like button sometimes. In my case, I just want the person to know that, while I may not have any words to express it, I really appreciate what they have done, either technically or artistically. I spent 35 years as a university professor and was not then or now given to favouritism. I tend to save my comments for my weekly summary; but I will try to write more often during the week. The rest of you have to keep posting lots of photos to challenge me and keep Digi entertained and amazed while he is out of action! 😀

We all will have some issues once in a while, it's a paret of what being human is I think 😋

I do use the like button just like David mentions, I do not always time to react on photos or replies so that like button is ideal for that

I went out this morning and noticed lovely white cumulus clouds. But I had no camera with me...

So when I went out later, I took the camera, and saw these views:

Another crane. I dont think I should like to have to climb up here twice a day.

The actual site. The concrete is going to be well reinforced!

Nearly home: the clouds look a bit more friendly.

But looking back the other way was a different story.

Subject: Update

Hi all. I'll give you an update. I'm feeling better but still weak. My strength comes and goes. I was writing a little on Dpreview and then all of a sudden I felt like I was "hammered". But all is well. I know when to back off. I saw all of the photos here. It was nice to see them. We had cranes, beautiful butterflies, daffodils, construction activity and stormy clouds. They all looked great. Please keep posting. I'll continue being in recovery mode and won't do too much for a while. 😀 I may get back to semi-normal activities by Sunday. I also had a ton of other pictures to share. I just got those bridge photos uploaded right when I was having that painful episode.

Do you all go out looking for things to take pictures of, or what? I've really never done that.

I think it's more going out and looking at things.

One of the best things I ever read, I think, was, "Look at what you're seeing, and see what you're looking at".

Go out and look at things, maybe it's a fair, or a space launch, or the clouds in the sky, just a walk in the woods. Take your camera with you. Look hard at what you're seeing. Maybe it it's a shape, or the way a shadow falls on that wall, or the light in that baby's eyes when they see something that delights them, or the color of that vibrant flower.

if you see something that stirs some kind of emotion... joy?, pride?, love?, awe?, sadness? triumph?, try to capture that emotion with your camera so that you can try to communicate that to others.
