This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

    Review of last week

We are all pleased that Digirame is making a good recovery and hope it will soon be complete. He got in first this week with a series of photos of a largely wooden pedestrian bridge from different angles. This was followed by some spectacular photos from Lake Tahoe of parasailing. His 800D/Tamron 150-600mm lens performed excellently there. His close up of a narcissus bloom for an Easter Card was welcome!

Photobygms hiked to a national park in The Netherlands and returned with some evocative photos of spring flora.

Steve has been experimenting with CRAW (Compressed RAW?) files. I am interested to know how these compare with regular RAW files. His test shots were also interesting artistically. He later waxed philosophical about the written word versus photography -- a nice interlude for us. THEN a tornado struck not far away. These are scary things, but the intrepid Steve was there with his camera for us! We are glad that he had no personal damage to report, but grieve for those who lost roofs and trees. He later showed us a photo of a delightful creature who came to lunch. We look forward to the photos of baby rabbits and squirrels he has promised.

I managed to get out several times this week. The first trip, at a time when I am usually still asleep, revealed interesting objects to photograph under the rising sun. My second trip gave nme a chance to show scenes of the urban rail system where I live -- and, so far, I claim the prize for the largest number of cranes in one photo! On my third trip I found some more blossom (cherry?)

Dunlin found some marsh marigolds and bluebells. I could have done with more pictures of these. We look forward to further reports about his change of working practices.

Keep sending photos of things local to you; they may be quite exotic to the rest of us.

    David

    Subject: Building Fire

In last previous weekly photo thread we were discussing natural disasters and so forth. I thought I would go back about two years and find the time I documented a local fire of a building. Someone had called me about this fire, so I rushed over there. The fire took about a day to be put out, so I really didn't need to rush. These photos were taken over three separate days. It was quite sad because one person lost their life.

Photo No. 1 - Here's one of the first pictures taken on January 2, 2022. It was smoky and foggy; that's why everything is not completely clear.

Photo No. 2 - I got closer either by walking there or digitally.

Photo No. 3 - And closer....

Photo No. 6 - OK, this was taken on January 16, 2022. It shows the aftermath of the destruction. Since one person died in the fire, I think they were slow into cleaning it up. I'm sure the police had to spend a lot of time investigating this. I don't know if they ever determined the cause of this building fire, whether it was faulty wiring or arson etc.

    Subject: Building Fire Followup

Being that Google is our friend, I did find out a few minutes ago that it was an arsonist that set the fire and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. They think the person that died in that fire, was there because he was trying to escape from the cold and died of smoke inhalation.

@Digirame, that's what I would call reporting photography / journalism a different kind of photography 👍

Last week has been a bit different for me, my father passed away (77 years old) on thursday, so had my hands full with my mother to get things sorted out for the burial. (which will be on thursday this week)

But there is and was still time left so to say for more enjoyable moments, went our for a hike just like normal 😀
Visited a small reserve close to home called Gasterse duinen. A small heath area with some trails through and around this stretch of nature.
Used a few different lenses again, EF 14mm F2.8L II, RF 24mm Macro, RF 24-240mm, EF 16-35 F4L IS and the Sigma 60-600S.

Photobygms, thanks for commenting on my journalism photography. Those type of opportunities to take pictures like that do not come up too often, unless a person is specifically looking out for those things. There's people that will report on crime or do some "cop watching", but I do not do that. Taking pictures of protesters that I did years ago was fun, catching those raw emotions.

I send my sincere condolences to you for the passing of your father. It's so hard for ones that we love so much.

    Photobygms,

I just love that first photo. That's a scary beast with those horns. Are the animals aggressive or docile? The rest of the photos remind me so much of Oregon (without the hills or mountains). I think the red, white and black bird is a woodpecker or sapsucker. Where I live we don't have a lot of cattle or cows, like I see in your pictures. But at Tillamook near the Pacific Ocean, they do have cows. Some local farmers have llamas or similar animals that are native to South America. I can't remember their names unless I look them up. One time a farmer near Forest Grove, Oregon was raising American bison, but that was years ago. I don't see them there any longer.

    @Digirame thanks!
My father used to be a journalist/reporter/editor chief for a regional newspaper until his pension.
We will remember the good days so to say 😄

Those Scottish highlander cows are actually one of the friendliest cows. They might look scary with those horns but they are not. Texas longhorns are scarier 😄
You just have to let them come to you and keep cool, they want to cuddle many times.
Only with calfs you have to be more carefull, they are very protective and keep an good eye

    Subject Spike Ball

About a week before I got sick, I was taking pictures of these people playing spike ball. I've played it previously. Have any of you?

Photo No. 1 - You can see the spike ball net below. The amphitheater was created with grass. It's a very popular spot in the hills in Portland, Oregon for people to relax and occasionally be entertained.

    @stevet1, thanks!!

@Digirame The weather was nice when you took the spike ball photos.
Have to honest got absolute no idea what that game is like 😁

We had also some nice weather this weekend, and even with everything going on over here it's nice to get out.
The temperatures are to high normally it should be around 12c but this weekend we had 22c and today even more sun compared to saturday.
We went out for a short ride to test our trekking-bikes (mixture between a MTB/mountianbike and racing bicycle) after they stood in our shed for a few years😐
After a bit of elbow grease they turned out be in a very good shape.
Took only our Canon Eos R and the RF 24mm to keep things portable 😃

And this is a bicycle highway between two cities (Assen - Groningen)
    IMR_0131.jpg
Wide as a normal road but for bicycles only for commuting as they like to say between the mentioned cities

    Photobygms,

Thanks for your interest in Spike Ball. I played it once. It was fun. I don't know if we played exactly by the rules, but this is what I remember. The ball is first spiked down in the net and then the ball bounces up. The ball can bounce up anywhere, so it does take some agility to spike the ball down towards the net again when it is your turn. From what I remember, you are not supposed to catch the ball and throw it but spike it as shown in photo no. 4. Each person takes a turn. I can't remember, but there might be two people per team when four are playing. I can't remember how it is scored or how long the game goes on before someone or some team is determined to be the winner. ChatGPT might know all of that stuff. 😀

    Photobygms,

I just love it that you have some bicycle only lanes for travel. How absolutely wonderful. Where I live, there's very few bicycle lanes and basically it is dangerous for bicycles on our roads. Some bicyclist take a chance and ride their bikes on the road with brightly colored clothes, but I sure won't. When I lived in California some of the roads were wide enough for bicycles, but Oregon does not do that very well. In the Portland, Oregon metro area we do have a train system and buses, but we are unfortunately too much of a car society. I wish we had a bike system like you do, where the bike lanes are completely independent from roads for cars and trucks. Then if it was safe I could ride a bike with my cameras and lenses.

I just love the blue sky. We had mostly cloudy skies today with some sun and showers. I'm glad you got out with your bikes and enjoyed your lovely landscapes. How beautiful!

I like that you expressed the temperatures in C. I now try to not do a conversion in my head from C to F. This is what I do instead now: Zero C is freezing, 10 C is cool, 20 C is warm and comfortable, 30 C is hot, and 40 C is unbearably hot. Anyway that's my system. Each person's "mileage may vary". 😀

    @Digirame
The Netherlands is a country with many bicycle paths/roads and even special MTB paths/trails in the various nature reserves😎
We prefer to hike, but sometimes it's a welcome change to be able to go for a ride😉

    Below zero is freezing.
    0 C = 32 F.
And we (better half and I) prefer the cooler side of the 30c, we feel comfortable between 0 - 20c above the 25c is getting hot and we just don't like that.
Below zero can be nice with good clothing and good weather
Because we have a sea climate in the Netherlands it will be most a high humidity when warm.
    Oh and Water boils at 100c = 212 F 😆

    Edit:
Nice blossoms, they do stand out again the building and green 👍

Started to walk out the front door and found this guy sitting on my front porch.

That's pushing it, don't you think? I'm not dead yet! You're just going to have to hold your horses!

    Photobygms,

Thanks. I'm glad you liked the purple blossoms. Like so much of everything, they are a moment in time. It's that time to capture them! 😀

    Steve,

That's a good capture of the vulture. Where I live I see them a lot in late summer when the ponds start drying. There the fish start dying too in spots, so they have a feast.
