This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

    Review of last week

Digirame dug out some fascinating photos that he made of a tragic fire in Hillsboro, OR, over two years ago (i.e. pre-DPRevived). Although we havent all necessarily had the opportunity of photographing such momentous experiences, it is a good idea to revisit our photos of yesteryear. Apart from the point that there seems little sense in taking photos that are never looked at, it is good to review our technical and artistic progress over time, and remind ourselves how technologoy has developed since the introduction of affordable digital cameras about 25 years ago. Please share any that you think might be of interest to us.

Digirame's next venture was at a spikeball game. Like most of us, I had never heard of this before. It looks like fun, though I am not sure quite what the rules are! He also found purple blossom at its peak, and a lot of what looked like geese to me. Are they migrating north? His weather is quite variable, with actual rain that looks like more than April showers.

Later he returned to the scene of the tragic fire, taking photos in light rain. Whatever the manufacturer's claim, I am always very reluctant to get my gear wet at all; but in the interests of science... it seems not to have been a problem. We have food carts all over the city here, they are part of the landscape and I will try to catch some photos of them.

We were all saddened to hear of the passing of Photobygms's father. Going out into the countryside for some fresh air always helps one to gain perspective in such circumstances, and he brought back more welcome evidence of spring. His bike trip showed us how advanced the Netherlands are in providing suitable and generous space for cycling. I hope to show what is being provided for bikes in our city, when the men have finished digging, later in the year!

Enter Steve with a mean looking vulture. Dont they start building nests and laying eggs at this time of year? Steve got enough clouds to satisfy his need for them, and also took a deer photo in his front yard, placing him in the back yard using Irfanview, with a very convincing result.

Meantime, I have enjoyed some sun, which has helped improve my efforts greatly. I will show some of the results in the new week.

    Keep enjoying the Spring!

    David

    Subject: Bell Bottom Jeans

Today, I was shocked to see bell bottom jeans again. So I looked it up and it seems they are coming back in style for 2024. If you see any also, please show them.

Subject: Pink Tree Blossoms and Blue Sky

Here's a couple of pictures I took the other day of some tree blossoms against blue sky. I had mentioned that previously. If you can find a branch of blossoms like that and blue sky, they make neat photos. There's no distracting elements.

I hope you can find some also. I was glad I took these when I could (when we had blue sky). Today we've had a lot of clouds roll in. We may have a lot of rain or maybe not. Apparently, we are on the border line of no rain and intense thunderstorms.

    Subject: Osprey

I was out hiking with the Canon 55-250mm lens on April 9th of this year. I didn't have the Tamron 150-600mm lens with me. I was not expecting to see these osprey. So I did the best that I could with the "shorter" telephoto lens and digitally zoomed it in a little by cropping.

I saw this male Brewer's Blackbird and just had to get its photograph. I hope you like these. If I didn't get this bird ID correct, please let me know.

I like bell bottoms. But I have only seen women wearing them recently. If you live long enough, fashions come around!

Nice set for a new fresh start of this thread @Digirame.
We're getting back on track after last week, most things are taken care of so we can move on so to say.

We visited the Dwingelderveld Nationalpark again for a hike, not much sun but with a decent 18-21c temperature range a nice day for a hike.
Took a small selection of gear this time.
A Canon Eos 1V(loaded with some Ilford Delta 100 film) and 5DIV with the EF 24-70 F4L IS USM and 70-200 F2.8L IS USM II
and the Eos R and RP with the RF 16mm F2.8 STM and RF 24-240 mm F4-6.3 IS USM

    A long exposure

This is a 10 sec long exposure at f/11 and ISO 100.

Taken with a Canon 55-250mm IS STM at 55mm. There was a slight breeze, so you can see some blurring in the tree leaves. Shot in CRAW and converted to jpg for web purposes.

I just got a 10 stop filter for this lens, and I wanted to see what kind of color cast it had. Not too bad in Auto White Balance, I think.

While the scene is nothing special, it seems to have a certain depth or richness to it. I don't know if that is the result of the f/11 aperture, or the length of the exposure. I want to do some more testing.

    That a nice one Steve.

Perhaps not the perfect subject with ND filters😉
I seldom use them but when it's with waterfalls, rivers. lakes and seas
Did use ND filters in Iceland this is just an example

    David,

Thanks for the reply about the bell bottoms. I'll have to keep my eye open to see if some of the boys or men would wear them also.

    Photobygms,

Every time I see your photos of your hikes, you make me want to do more hiking. I just love seeing them. I also take lots of photos like you do of nature.

I'm glad to hear you are having warm temperatures around 20c. You all must have had a lot of rain too. It's so nice this time of year, when it's not too hot nor cold.

    Steve,

That's an interesting experiment. The photo does look nice, that is the sharpness (other than motion blur), contrast and colors. You'll have to compare this image to one that is taken without a ND filter.

Yes, long exposure is kind of interesting. You can reduce or eliminate motion where it does exist. You can also incorporate blur to introduce a sense of motion, sort of panning in reverse.

    It's an interesting genre.

    Subject: Mt. Hood

About a month ago in March I was able to find Mt. Hood between a group of trees. It's an old volcano east of Portland, Oregon that reaches over 11,000 feet high. Previously I have hiked around there in June in a rocky treeless area. Some summer I hope to be able to do that again.
