Your Canon Photos No. 52: 28th April to 4th May 2024

This weekly thread is principally intended for you to showcase your photos made with Canon cameras of all sorts: SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, M-series, APS-C, film, etc. But any brand of camera will be accepted, including photos taken with your phone. We do enjoy reading an accompanying text explaining your photo and any special techniques you may have used. Comments and helpful criticisms on others' photos are also welcome: we can all learn something from each other. We look forward to seeing your contributions and new participants to this series of threads are always welcome!

A new thread for the following week will be posted next Saturday around 10 pm UK time.

Digirame and I will be active here and are sharing the hosting, but we are used to all joining in and commenting on others' photos.

Review of last week

Steve started the week a little confused about when the moon is able to eclipse the sun. Hopefully he has it figured out by now that the eclipse can only happen when the moon is new and in front of the sun. Or was he just pretending not to know this? 😀

Photobygms has been on the beach in Domburg, though it doesnt look like the was soaking up any sun. He turned in dramatic pictures.

It looks like Digirame's chauffeur was racing with the McClaren: the photo is a nice memento.

So I countered with my car. It was static and the holiday in January enabled me to stand in the middle of a normally busy road to take the shot. In case you never knew, there used to be twice as many cabins on the Riesenrad. Every other one was removed just after WW2 for some reason.

Steve focussed on the Earth and showed us dogwood, which I havent seen here. Also a photo of his Wrangler pretending to climb a hill.

Why do I get the impression that Digirame is a bird lover? The female red-winged blackbird looks totally diffrent from the male. Of the two pictures, I prefer the first.

Photobygms responded with mallard ducks. They look well-fed!

Digirame also produced a nice portrait of a different kind of duck, and then moved on to tulips. Great shots. I liked the first one best, with what looks like a wasp inside.

Meanwhile, back in Domburg we had a variety of evocative beach views, flora and fauna from Photobygms.

Back to Digirame who showed trillium -- or trillia??? Great shots.

Steve had some great weather this week and showed us that his spring is well established.

Following this were more birds from Photobygms. These are very exotic creatures for a city dweller like me. I enjoyed seeing them all.

Steve's hiding cats were a good balance and brought to a close a very interesting and varied week.

A recent photo in not very exciting weather. The building is the Bundesministerium für Landesverteidigung (Federal Ministry of National Defence), part of the Rossauer Barracks. By the way, the inclusion of "au" in the name of any place here indicates that it was marsh land up until c.1870 when the Danube and its tributaries were tamed. The water here is the Danube Canal, which used to form the eastern boundary of the city.

There is a bird in there somewhere -- another duck?

That's interesting to see a different type of picture from you. Is all the brightly colored paintings along the river graffiti? We sometimes have graffiti in our area, but it is almost always quickly covered up. Or possibly I haven't been in parts of our city where they might have it. The people on bicycles help dimension the paintings. I don't know what type of bird that is; it looks like a cartoon character. I suppose we could call it a duck.

Subject: Sacajawea

Here's some pictures of a statue of Sacajawea. I took this photo in Washington Park last week while I was traveling through Portland, Oregon on a cloudy and rainy day. Sacajawea was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who in her teens helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition over 200 years ago. Some spellings of her name can be found as Sacagawea. I think this statue is marvelous. I hope you like it too.

I like the dandelion photo. I've taken a few like that also. I would use my zoom lens and crop in to get closer. I'm not familiar with the software you are using. I'm just using IrfanView. I spend as little time as I can post processing, since I take a massive amount of pictures each week.

I like that you were able to get close to the seagull. It's fun seeing how close you can get to them using a wide/normal lens, before they fly off. Then with a relatively short focal length you can get that great depth of field, so that everything in the background is in focus (with the lens stopped down a little). I assume in the background that's a walkway. There must be plenty of photo opportunities for you at that location. I don't know why the EXIF data gets wiped out for you. I'm just using IrfanView (free software) and the EXIF data stays intact. I also wrote a computer program in MS Word to capture the EXIF data separately too. I use IrfanView to put the EXIF data in the clipboard and I go from there.

As far as post processing with other software, I know very little about that. I try to get the proper exposure etc. while taking the picture, so I don't have to spend time later adjusting it on the computer. I look at the histogram and "chimp" almost every time I'm using the camera to make sure the photo is good.

I find that auto focusing to be more accurate, so I do not manually focus. But some people like to have that control. I like the bokeh when I'm using a telephoto lens for wildlife. Otherwise, I attempt to have great depth of field with my wide/normal lenses and sometimes with my "short" telephoto zoom lenses. I do not shoot monochrome pictures, but some people like that also. Steve here on this forum demonstrated to me a while back that Canon's greens turn out better on cloudy days when using the cloudy white balance. I found that the AWB (auto white balance) was not good enough in such conditions. My pictures of Sacajawea were taken with the cloudy white balance. The greens there were what I saw. If I had used AWB I think the greens more have been more bluish as I recall.

I like your "venue" photo best of all so far.

While you are fixing the missing EXIF data, tell us what camera you have. I have an R6 and also a Leica Q3.

I shoot raw and only do basic manipulation. This works for me: I enjoy doing the post processing in PhotoLab. I sometimes sharpen in Topaz Sharpen AI, and apply final polish in Photoshop CS5. I dont monitor in B&W or use "picture styles", but sometimes I convert the file to B&W.

Getting it right in the camera can be difficult as you noted with the complexity, so some post processing is required. I just try to minimize that post processing. I'm constantly challenging myself to do better when I'm outside with the camera. I'm still annoyed at myself sometimes that I have to crop a picture, when I should have done a better job of composing it when I snapped the photo. So, I'm still working on that.

Yesterday when I was taking pictures, it was raining and I had a large umbrella that was shaking because of the wind. So I wasn't too hard on myself when the composition wasn't better. As a result, there was additional post processing that I had to do. Taking pictures in the rain can be hard, but some of the photos can be really good too. They are quite different than what a person would get on a sunny day, especially if the photographer captures storm clouds in the background.

Subject: Big Foot

Yesterday while taking pictures of tulips, I spotted Big Foot. I did not see the creature any other time. At first I saw it near the trees on the left.

So there we have it. There is no longer any doubt. Big Foot (Sasquatch) does exist. 😀

Edit: I was looking at the photos again this morning. The reason I did not see Big Foot later again during the day, is actually I believe it was stationary. I thought it came out from the trees on the left side but that was a person in dark clothing with a backpack instead.

Subject: Wedding Pictures

Last weekend I was walking in Washington Park where I saw the Sacajawea statue and somewhat nearby to that I also saw a photographer taking wedding pictures. At least, that is what it seemed to me to be. So I joined in and I thought I would also share them with you. At that park, we never know what we will see.
