In Holland the camera costs €2700,- ($2944,-).
The price difference is annoying but according to some sources it has to do with the EU extended warranty in comparison to the US.
I'd have assumed that the VAT (which is a higher % than sales taxes in most US states) would also be a factor. Also, in many cases US pricing is quoted without tax included, whereas in my experience the reverse is generally the case in the EU. Not sure if that applies here...
If I order via B&H, where the ZV-E1 is advertised for $2,198, calculate shipping and tax (via b&h) to have it shipped to NY (US) the price comes down to (US) $2393 which equals (EU) €2201 at the current rate.
The other way around: it is (EU) €2699,- in Holland which equals (US) $2933,- at the current rate.
US NY customers pay 18.4% less for the same device.

So, depending on how much of the added $$ is shipping and how much is tax, that suggests that the local sales taxes they are applying for NY are less than 10%.

Given that, from what I understand, the rate of VAT for cameras in the Netherlands is 21%, a sizeable amount of the price difference you're calculating would be accounted for by the difference in tax.
Granted, that would still leave a 5-7% difference unaccounted for, so you still have a point. However it seems it's not as big a discrepancy as face value of the prices makes it appear...
I forgot to mention, B&H ships free of charge for that particular camera.

A difference in pricing of almost 20% to me implies that it actually is but ofcourse we are all entitled to our own interpretation of that I guess.
