I would be delighted if someone could possibly explain my last ban, the one for insinuating someone was a P&G plant. Just for the fun of it because I am usualy pretty good at reading inbetween the lines but I just can't figure that one out.

Maybe I should know this, but what's a P&G plant? Probably nothing to do with Procter & Gamble ...

The X100vi is out. Time to get Fujifilm to build us a comparable X-S1 replacement. Compact/Bridge Feb. 23, 2024, 12:55 p.m.

The sensor in the X100vi is the same aps-c sensor as in the X-H2 and X-T5. Your X-S1 had a 2/3" sensor, making for a smaller camera

    Another thread locked without reason

    www.dpreview.com/forums/post/67536106

A poster vanished meanwhile as Russian dissidents do.

Why does it matter here what is going on on DPR?

Because it can't be discussed there.

The thread was locked at 140 on the grounds of 'trending towards uncivil' and 'subject covered'. As a matter of fact the most uncivil in the last posts was an observation the suspicion that the OP was sailing under a false flag to make click bait. Seems he got away with it.

BTW: don't think the poster who became an unknown member was vanished, but rather that he came to the realization that he was being tricked in that thread and had enough of it.

English English or Other English? Requests, help and bugs found Aug. 17, 2023, 4:06 p.m.
    @davidwien has written:

Dont get me going! I hate the use of media when medium is correct, and data instead of datum, to name but two instances. But I had the misfortune to do Latin and Greek in school, so I am still inclined to think that the pural of octopus is octopodés. Then there’s the use of gift as a verb, when there is the perfectly good word give. And I happen to live in a German-speaking country where english words are often substituted for perfectly good German words. I am told this is because the English words are considered „chic“, or something...

    David

And then you get 'the media is ...'
What about the noun Handy [for a cell / mobile phone]. Sounds English, is German

Why are some high and low ISO settings 'special'? Technical Discussions Aug. 17, 2023, 10:50 a.m.

To my (limited) understanding the ‘electrical’ changes extend only over part of the range. Over and under that, changes are digital. At some point, images at that setting do no longer completely meet the quality level the camera maker sets. There are several points where the camera maker can make choices applying the standard, this is one

Photography helps with mental health problems Open Talk Aug. 13, 2023, 1:44 p.m.

Last week I went to an exhibition of Van Gogh's last works [in the Museum named after him]. Last means from the period after his release from the St Remy mental institution untill his death two months later. The only exhibition I've ever seen BTW that comes with adresses for the suicide helpline.

He was very prolific, creating several pieces per day, mostly landscapes, some portraits. Maybe it was a form of self-medication for him. But I think the desperation and depressedness show. Especially in the color palettes for the landscape that lack all warmth.

so creativity does not always help, enough

Wednesday afternoon is forum change day Governance and organisation Aug. 10, 2023, 12:22 p.m.

Thanks for all the work, it's looking much better!
    Couple o things:
    - I thought the mf43 forum would go as the potential users preferred going to brand forums?
    - I can no longer see the beta testers forum, a matter of permissions or has it been abandoned?
    - it's a choice but we now have a very popular 'image discussions' forum within the 'news' category and also a category 'photographic genres'. Seems a bit lopsided and seeing also the discussion about the 'weeklies' something for future consideration

    ISO, & the use thereof Open Talk Aug. 9, 2023, 8:31 p.m.

It's an epidemic for sure. Ever since I've been shooting with an interchangeable lens camera -and even before that, I've only ever been aware of 3 variables when making exposures. Who knew so many could be getting so wrong, for so long. <>

Me too: 1) shutter speed; 2) f-number and 3) amount of light coming from the scene ...

you must be God to be able vari sun light 😜🤔 the camera is recording an image of the light ,there are 3 in camera variables.

You cannot personally change the sun, but the change happens over time of day, day of year and location. And yes, you take these changes into account, even if implicitly
So "ISO"is at best a [distant] fourth variable.

So where is someone to go who wants to use a Sigma lens for L on a Panasonic L and a Leica L camera (all these exist, even though not in huge numbers)..?

Or a Panasonic lens for L on a Sigma fp?

Or a Panasonic lens for µ4/3 on an Olympus µ4/3?

If one takes a picture with or has a question/statement about an L-mount lens on a Panasonic then one goes to the Panasonic category.

If one takes a picture with or has a question/statement about an L-mount lens on a Leica then one goes to the Leica category.

It's all to do with hierarchy, Robert.

If your suggestion is to keep the hardware-oriented L-mount "System" main category, then we should also have 4/3, µ4/3, M, E, F, SA, etc.

Yes I think it would be better if things were organised around the mount, not the brand: camera, lens and adapter that can be used together. Logical, not hierarchical. But I'm obviously in the minority, so be it

    Worms Fujifilm Aug. 3, 2023, 8:37 p.m.

Looking at the exif of this HDR:
    - contrast +100
    - texture +100
    - clarity +50
Seems like over the top processing [the maker said it was an experiment], once more not an example of the infamous worms

The layout looks clean. It's easy to scroll from top-to-bottom in just a few swipes. It's organized and simple to grok where to go. I like it.

I do have a couple of suggested edits.
    - Change "Beginners' Questions" to either "Beginner Questions" or "The Basics" in News & Discussion
    - Add a "Photo Art" section to Photographic Genres. Let's give artists who use photography in their work a forum.
    - Change "Post processing workflow" to "Digital Darkroom" in Photographic Techniques

Also, I would suggest making the main chapters collapsible. Tap to expand and see the forums within. Tap to collapse to see just the chapter header. That would make the initial appearance even cleaner and would allow a person to swipe from top-to- bottom in just one or two motions.

    Well done.

all good suggestions. I don't have too fond memories of the beginners question forum at dpreview, a departure from that might be good

In the DEV version there was a forum Mobile phones under Photographic Equipment, but I cannot find that in the xls

    Line 102 in the spreadsheet.

I see now. Does not seem like a great place to me. What we might hope for is discussion of the use of a phone as a camera and I would be looking for that under Equipment, not OS. But then IMO as photographers we might want to have conversations about hardware [what computer or printer] and not so much about the OS.
PS: I think the name 'post processing workflow' could be shortened, to Processing and workflow. Or lengthened, to post capture processing software. Or maybe 'Photography software

    Thanks for the Excel.

Would I had had it from the beginning I could have understood what all this talk was about from the beginning.

One suggestion I can think of :

And the other thinking "home" vs "external":

I really dont feel fit to put Pets in Portraits/People 👀

    😂😂😂😂😂

I agree with the suggestion about 'bridge and compact cameras' as the new place for, well bridge and compact camera. These would be from the excel:
    Canon PowerShot Talk
    Fujifilm FinePix Talk
    Panasonic Lumix S Talk ???
    Leica Compact Camera Talk
    Nikon Coolpix Talk
    Olympus Compact Camera Talk
    Panasonic Compact Camera Talk
    Pentax Compact Camera Talk
    Sony Cyber-shot Talk
    Casio Talk
    Kodak Compact Camera Talk

Hope I've seen them all. Some of them are currently empty. As are the pots and the pets, so no worries. But there is nothing for images that don't fit in a genre?
