Dear members of the DPRevived/The-Photo forum,

News update. It doesn’t look like we will get any enhancements to the forum in the foreseeable future. Bob & Martin have moved on to other things and the forum updates are not getting the attention they need. I’m sorry about this, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

We have enough money in the bank to keep going for around another 6-12 months. So now it’s down to you all – do you want to keep this going? Personally, I love what is happening in here and have made many virtual friends out of it, but I am only one of about 50 active members (and possibly a load of sleeping viewers).

Nothing will happen for at least 6 months, so we have time to debate how we can proceed. There’s a few options:
    1. Do nothing and hope that contributions from members will continue.
    2. Close off in 6 months time once the existing cash has run out.
    3. Move the forum to a free site and start again – this would be one based on myBB or similar which I can maintain. But we cannot transfer the images and posts.
    4. Something else.

Let us know what you think in the replies to this post.

    Cheers

    Alan & Bob

I would be sad to see this site fold. It has outlasted the other sites that sprang up after the DPR "closure". I think we have all got used to the sites interface limits.

If we are about active 50 members, the first question is how much would some sort of "subscription" cost to keep this going in this cosy little niche. I have been happy to support in a small way.

Looking at todays DPR, I do not see how or where the weekly image threads could fit in.

    Thanks Nigel,

I'd also like to see it continue. I don't want subscriptions because we'd have to pay tax, whereas donations don't.

It doesn't have to be much. I'll work out what it would cost to keep it going now I know more about the bank charges and company fees.

    cheers

What about sponsorship? 12 members willing to sponsor one month’s operations each year? I might be interested to do this (anonymously) depending on what the monthly cost would be.

    Best wishes

This site the way it is doesn't bother me. As long as it's around I will visit it.

I did spend 26 years on DPR and after the change I still visit it. More changes are to come it seems, with the revamp that is coming.

    A couple of points:

I would be happy to provide a regular donation if the sites' survival depended on it. A rough idea of the yearly costs to get an idea of how much might be required would be good.

Moving to myBB might be a blessing in disguise as there are a lot of sleepers over on DPR who are just hanging around there not interacting much because they hate the new non-threaded view.
If we did move to myBB I would suggest we would need to do a fair bit of customisation to get it looking like a photo site - but I don't believe that is overly difficult for those with web / html design skills - glancing over in Arvo's direction 😉.

Re your point on not being able to transfer images and posts: Won't / don't you have access to the current site database / image store? Surely Martin would allow you / someone to get a copy? Assuming so, I am sure between Arvo, myself and anyone else with the skills we could achieve something. Are there specific reasons why we couldn't?

Should we start another private thread for discussion of the nitty gritty and perhaps a separate public one for overall views / comments?

There are quite a few weekly threads over at DPR.

I'm happy to start a private thread for those interested. If you want to join in, tell me here (Bryan, Nigel, I'll add you in now).

I choose #2 on the basis that DPR never went away and on the basis that my main interest is in Technology and Sigma Foveon-based cameras ...

My question is where would the two or three general image threads fit in. Wormsmeats's weekly thread could not go back to M43 for example, because there is a replacement weekly thread. It would be a great pity for that thread to end as it has been going for years.

    Bye 😁

I choose number 1 (obviously) assuming we get enough people to stay with me.

    Hi,

I liked #3 until I got to the part where the existing data can't be copied over.

I have less than zero idea how much money y'all are talking about for #1. I could guess, but then I would have to switch to using imaginary numbers.... :P

A relatively small donation from some the 50 or so users would keep the ship afloat for a year.

I definitely want to see this continue. The current site is functional and we've learned how to work with it. When DPR was going to close I looked at all the available options for continuing the Sunday Cat! and felt that this one was going to be best. I believe that I was not wrong about that. DPR's survival though took away folks that might have become regulars here. I find DPR to be a mess now, and really wouldn't want to go back, especially as they have some other revamping in store. (Just checked in on DPR and right now none of the posted photos are displaying!) I've also had to deal with a lot of deaths in the last few months so on top of everything else I don't want to see this die. I'm fine with contributing some $$ to keep this going.

Like Bryan, I'd like to understand the issue of why the data here can't be migrated, if moving to different forum software would be the best option.

I'll try and reply to all the above.

Money - it costs us around £500 per year to keep this going. Not a lot and it gives us a fast access and lots of disk space (I still need to find out how to add more to each user). So, if we had 50 active users providing £10 each per year, we are solvent.

Data can't be migrated because I don't have access to the underlying database. Even if I did, it's very complex - not all forums are designed the same way, and this one is very bespoke. I have looked into it (myBB does explain how to do it) and it's seriously not that easy.

Why not to Samples and Galleries since it is multi brand thread?

    Hi,

I don't keep up with exchange rates, so I had to look it up. $1.36 USD per Pound. So not all that much per person is pretty much spot on.

    Hi

Ya know, I used to have quite a gallery over on DPR. Over 20 years worth of images from a good many cameras. All linked back into Threaded forums.

The gallery Went Away as part of the Great Shut Down that didn't wind up quite happening. So, then a bunch of posts all now with no images. No way to put them back where they would be re-linked. So, no point in making up a new gallery even though I still have all those images locally. Now it would make even less sense as the loss of Threaded view broke the contexts under which they were added to the gallery.

So, going forward from the demise of the DPR shutdown, I have been posting new images Here instead. So, I want to see Here continue on. A $13.60 USD per year is quite a low cost I think.
