Dear members of the DPRevived/The-Photo forum,

News update. It doesn’t look like we will get any enhancements to the forum in the foreseeable future. Bob & Martin have moved on to other things and the forum updates are not getting the attention they need. I’m sorry about this, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

We have enough money in the bank to keep going for around another 6-12 months. So now it’s down to you all – do you want to keep this going? Personally, I love what is happening in here and have made many virtual friends out of it, but I am only one of about 50 active members (and possibly a load of sleeping viewers).

Nothing will happen for at least 6 months, so we have time to debate how we can proceed. There’s a few options:
    1. Do nothing and hope that contributions from members will continue.
    2. Close off in 6 months time once the existing cash has run out.
    3. Move the forum to a free site and start again – this would be one based on myBB or similar which I can maintain. But we cannot transfer the images and posts.
    4. Something else.

Let us know what you think in the replies to this post.

    Cheers

    Alan & Bob

As others have said, it'd be a shame to close the site as it's a nice little community, so I'm happy to chip in a few quid now and then to help keep the lights on.

I think continuing with the existing software would be my preferred option. Even if it has a few rough edges, it seems to be responsive, mostly solid, works well on mobile devices as well as desktop and I quite like being able to format my posts with Markdown tags (not everyone's cup of tea I know, but as an aged games programmer I find it ideal). Swapping to another platform would only introduce new issues to be resolved and seems even less viable if there's no reasonably practical way to transfer the existing content over.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Thanks Steve - and thank you for your donation. I agree. We are staying here for as long as we can.

I haven't donated for quite awhile, not because I don't believe ThePhoto is worthy but because I just didn't think about. In the US we are used to the regular NPR fund drives. Maybe ThePhoto should run a campaign once or twice a year to remind people.

BTW I just pulled the trigger to a 100 pound donation.

Yes, I agree with the idea of periodic campaigns or reminders. I try to remember in April but I forgot until this subject came up.

    Hi,

Maybe we can all associate it with our birthdays. We have a birthday and the site gets a present.

I am obviously biased, but I would stick to Misago for now. Next major release is few months away and there is a lot of good stuff coming, some of it done with one eye to the use cases of forums like this one.

Biggest hurdle will be updating while preserving customizations, but if you guys have access to the existing code and can deploy changes, its doable. And next version is much easier to customize with plugins too.

    Rafal,

I would love us to go to the next version - however, our sole developer is not really doing much at the moment. So we are stuck with this version. We are staying with Misago - just a very outdated one.
