Mappings that are not popular and not often, if ever, used here

Most images posted here are aimed at conventionally high image quality in addition to good composition.

There is a class of processing called "Mapping" which can improve global image quality in one shot as opposed to messing with a good few editor sliders until it looks right.

One such pre-AI mapping is called "Retinex" - invented by E. Land of the Polaroid Co. long ago. Popular for aerial shots or scenes with haze, fog or mist.

I simulated such a scene in the GIMP:
    misted.jpg

Then applied a Retinex mapping with the G'MIC plugin and no subsequent adjustments:

Talk about 'cutting through the mist' !!

Another one: "Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Expansion" (CLAHE).

    Original:

Brightened a bit then CLAHE applied with no subsequent adjustments:

    Good for cloud contrast ...

Can you display Retinex result for original one too? (This should be similar to Sigma SPP fill light processing, parameters are of course different.)

I hate to ask, Arvo, but why?

My experience is that Retinex doesn't do very well when applied to normal images.

Here's one that, like CLAHE, adjusts a histogram but only the global one, not broken into separate tiles.

    Original:

This is the GIMP's Color>Auto>Equalize. With no available adjustments it's a bit fierce:

Might work if blended with the original but I'm only talking about one-shot methods in this thread.

How do you enable it for modern apps like Lightroom or ON1 etc?

Not sure what is meant by "enable it", Alan. I have three apps that come with it, the GIMP, RawTherapee and ImageJ.

So, I have no idea, sorry ...

Maybe Lightroom can take this plug-in?

    www.russellcottrell.com/RCFilters/Retinex.php

    Arvo, there it says:

    Quoted message:

Retinex is best suited for rescuing underexposed or badly color balanced images, or for extracting detail for scientific or technical purposes. It is not always useful for enhancement of well-exposed naturalistic images.

As I have just now demonstrated ...
