Agree. It probably wasn't clear, but my suggestion was the opposite: There's no general membership fee at all. You only pay to return after a ban to compensate for the moderation work that your behavior made necessary. It's entirely voluntary to pay those $5 to get your posting rights back, you can also go find another forum instead.

    Apologies - I missed that.

We can already see the email address. And, as mentioned above, we have no way of validating a name or the gender - so, what's the point?

Right now participants on this site are protected by its sheer newness and relative invisibility on the internet. That's going to last a while, so maybe this immediate concern over moderation/banning etc. is a tad John Birch?

IOW, DPRevived should be so lucky as to have the problem.

My point is very simple: I would like to see a forum where anonymous trolls cannot do and write what they want because they are behind their shield of anonymity.
Dpreview was full of it and I know numerous people (I'm not going to name them) who left because of those anonymous trolls.
I am not interested to communicate with xxx when I see in the profile "xxx is not sharing any details with others."
Creating member categories is a solution for that.
BTW, I own, ran and run 2 fora myself.
    Kindest regards,
    Stany

I am not a troll and have not been in all my 17 years on DP Review. With all due respect I would not touch with a 10' pole any forum requiring my personal information like name, address and such. And judging by the popularity of the DP Review, it is far from being ruined by members, even bad ones and / or moderators.

No. I have no interest in having my personal information on a website I participate in as part of a hobby.

My personal expectation is that I am interacting with adults who should be able to manage their emotions and mind their manners. If you need to threaten people to do so by holding their personal information, those are, IMO, people you really don't want in your community.

No they didn’t. DPReview was killed by commercial greed. As for people posting abuse, moderation will take care of it. No forum since the dawn of the Web has solved the problem of ill intentioned trouble makers and this forum isn’t going to be the first.

While I haven't personally put much effort to hide my identity (anyone determined with fairly basic search skills can figure out my identity quickly), I'd find it unfortunate if people with deeper desire or need for privacy could not participate here. Some pretty good examples of valid reasons were mentioned earlier. I can't help thinking of the phrase "Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater" as applying somewhat here.

The trick is to separate the ill intentioned trouble makers and those that do it unintentionally. That's to say nothing of peoples' different standards of 'trouble'.

I think there's enough of us on here who:

    a) Want this to succeed
    b) Are willing to be a part of a successful community
    c) Will shout out if they see what they perceive to be trollish behaviour

that we can manage it without the impossible task of validating who is or is not "geniune".

You would certainly know this, wouldn't you David. You were a constant pain in the rear troll/flamer person at DPReview and you got banned countless times. But you seem to bounce back every time-UGH!!!

There are some very strange ideas being put forth on here.

I saw in one of your previous posts that the fact that Bobn2 and Iliah Borg are here is part of the reason you joined. Maybe you didn't notice but either Bobn2 is an anonymous name or he's from some strange country where first name and surname is combined. I have no idea on the numeral part of it.

I've noticed that you are promoting your own camera forum when you insert you website in your signature. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I don't think I am, but weren't you booted from DPReview for doing the same thing? And while it likely had zero impact on DPReview, this is a new startup, so why promote your site here?

Further to that, I could not care less if Stany Buyle is your actual name or something you hatched up. I place no more relevance on the actual name than I do on, for example, an anonymous username such as anotherMike, and to be truthful probably a lot less. I have an opinion on why a minority use their own names, but I'll keep that to myself.

In my opinion, you're here nitpicking about foolishness, wanting actual names and website addresses etc., etc. The name "troll" was usually applied on DPReview to anyone who didn't agree with you ( collective you - not you personally ), as a way to dismiss or diminish the value of what the "troll" said.

I don't know what you mean because there are 263 pages worth of names starting with david on the old DPR

    www.dpreview.com/search/members?query=david&page=1

Take your pick. I am happy for anyone to think I am any one of those :-)

On the old DPR some people made wild and stupid accusations against other members when they let their immaturity and frustrations get the better of them. It was entertaining to watch.

The funniest one was a member accusing bobn2 and me of being the same person. I posted the link to the post a day or so ago here in another thread.

Fwiw, it's highly likely that you yourself were banned several times on the old DPR for making stupid unproven accusations ;-)
