The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

Thread Guidelines:

1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
   Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
   ”Likes” are encouraged too.
5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

The Klapotetz

Today I’m off for a weekend where I might be able to make some more NEW photos in the Austrian mountains, but for now I’ll have to make do with a post from the ARCHIVE.

In 2020 we made a trip to South Styria (“Südsteiermark”).
In the autumn time the vineyards look fantastic with their distinct colours and patterns.

The first shot is one of a thousand such views in this area. A photographer’s dream.
Perhaps you noticed what looks like a windmill in the middle, it is, however, a scarecrow that claps and bangs as it turns to frighten off the hungry birds while the grapes are ripe.

This unique traditional device is the “Klapotetz”. It’s found in Slovenia and just over the border here in Austria’s South Styria.
If you zoom right in , in the image below, you can see that as the wind blows it turns the shaft so that those multiple little wooden hammers fall and clap on the long wooden (resonance) board hung under the shaft. The sound it makes is a sort of irregular banging pattern. The broom at the back helps it to turn round to face into the wind. I’m sure the neighbours are happy that it is only operated in the period when the grapes are ripe and nice and tasty.

Today, there are black plastic nets, that are hung over the vines, keep the birds away, but the Klapotetz is still there, throughout the region, for all to see and has become an iconic landmark for this area.
By the way, you can see the (modern) rolled-up nets running parallel to the vines in this photo.

Love the autumn colours

Just back from Peru...a couple of landscapes from a walk with llama and alpacas

Lovely bright and sunny and "friendly" colours; must have been a good walk.

The first is a beautiful landscape with the lake and mountain range, but it's those fluffy white clouds that are the star of the show, especially with the wide angle you used. They add enormous depth to the shot, and seemingly go back for miles and miles.

VERY INTERESTING! I will try to find some Sauvignon Blanc from South Styria. Have a great weekend in the mountains.

You are a LONG way from home... 10,000 km on a great circle! That is a really nice shot. Excellent IQ. Very good!

I tried, but I did not take any traditional "landscape" pictures this week... so... I was considering an archive image. But then, I thought, oh well... I will post a cityscape from a few days ago (Tacoma / Dock Street MOG). I was taking a walk after finishing a business meeting. Kind of a landscape? This is a companion shot that goes with the image posted in the B&W thread -- as you continue walking up the steps. I'm looking toward the west in the mid/late afternoon which makes the lighting a bit difficult. The D810 has good DR, so I was able to salvage it (somewhat). Always fun to shoot and fiddle in post.

Factory Butte

On a recent photo trip to Eastern Utah (US) the weather didn't really cooperate. But as they say - the show must go on.

From around the June Lake loop last fall.

Interesting immersive perspective in the shot, especially when viewed on a big monitor.
Lots of lines and curves here :-)

Judging from this shot the the weather looks pretty good ;-)
Lots of layers here, and different textures in each of those layers. The sky is marvelously moody.

The colours in the first are amazing. Somehow those yellows and oranges look even better when contrasted with the, more or less, B&W background.
And then we get double the pleasure; with it all reflected in the lake :-)

In the second, I like the way you've compared the bright yellow tree against the dark background; really makes that little lone tree stand out.
