    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

A hike in the Riedingtal valley

Recently we visited one of our favourite places once again.
The snow has mostly melted, just a few patches left here and there. Spring has now arrived here after the long winter
The hike started well, but didn't end so well :-(

    The path through the valley

The path leads up by the Riedinger mountain hut. It’s still closed, but will open soon when the cows are driven up onto the pastures again.
You can see the waterfalls in the distance

The way back; on the other side of this hill, our car was waiting not too far away. But It took longer than expected ☹
… on a slippery part, just past this spot, my wife tripped and sprained her ankle. It was very painful but it could have been a lot worse, being close to the edge! We limped slowly back to car. Two weeks later, her ankle is still somewhat swollen, but it’s getting better.

    Up The Draw

A draw is a slang term used in the Western US for a natural course of flow to remove of "draw" water off the land after a storm. In photography they make
    wonderful leading lines.

Beautiful and well done! I like them all, but I think #2 is my favorite. I can smell the crisp air and I can feel it. The waterfalls and flowers... very nice. Sorry to hear about your wife's injury. I hope for a good and speedy recovery. I do not have any "landscape" photos this week (work has been "a bear") so I will go to the archive... which I try not to do (because I LIKE getting OUT each week). But the clock is what it is... and as I said, I didn't do any landscape shooting this week. A little bit of test shooting, but that's it!

That's exceptional. That's really cool. You hit the sweet spot on exposure and contrast/clarity. Calm and natural but with impact. And composition. Plus the sky. Everything comes together on this one. Where is it, specifically? Since I am "going to the archive" this week, I will look for some shots that I took back in 2015 (?) from Arches NP. Or maybe Grand Canyon in 2018. Once I retire, I will definitely be going on some road trips with the camera.

We got to Arches a few minutes before sunrise - my wife's idea not mine. That too early as the sun was too low and mostly formations were in the shadows. There is a long road that runs the length - this was close to the end. It was taken a little after 8 - great low angle directional light. I luckily had geotagging on so it here is what Google Map shows 38°41'12.1"N 109°32'09.8"W

    www.google.com/maps/place/38°41'12.1%22N+109°32'09.8%22W/@38.6866925,-109.536055,1159m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d38.6866925!4d-109.536055?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQyOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

To save battery, I only update location on 4 minute intervals the location is in the ball park. The luck of the day was the sky. Another problem at dawn was the cloud cover. As the morning went on the clouds lifted but there was still a thin breaking layer with blue sky peaking through to give a light variegated tonality. Often on the Western slope of the Rockies, the sky is "bluebird blue" which can be distracting.

I would have liked to have continued on the Window Sands Loop Trail but given my 79 years old original equipment knees that was not going to happen that day. On our way out the Eastern sun was illuminating the formations on the right side of the road with low angle directional light and we made what seemed out 50 stops.

More cityscapes than landscapes, but I enjoyed taking these

The three bridges in Bath. I loved the way the weir led me in to them.

I liked taking this one - the symmetry was amazing.

Landscapes without sky can be very effective, such as this one. Really draws you along the path.
    Hope the ankle mends quickly.

I mentioned above that I would reach back in the archive since I wasn't able to capture a landscape shot during the week. This pano is from February 2015. Arches NP in Utah. Taken with the D7100 and the 17/55 DX. I really liked that camera... and that lens. NOTE: I did some "re-fiddling" and re-sizing of the "old" (very old) JPEG. Not much, just a little. I was going to start from scratch and re-process the RAWS... but it has been a long day (digging holes in the yard, planting for a hedge)... so I'm a bit tired!

That's a great shot. It has all the details of the fascinating large rocks on the left and also the view back into the distance on the left side.
The colours red/orange against the blue sky is nice.
I also used to have and very much enjoyed using the D7100 :-)

Those curved lines of the weir do look good, as does the bridge !
And the symmetry in the second is really quite pleasing

    edit?:
I was thinking about that wall on the left side, somehow it takes your view away from the nice curves and the white water of weir
Maybe an edit like this could work? or retaking the shot from a different place if possible ?
The diagonal line from the weir seems to now go straight through the bridge :-)

Full of interesting details. I can feel lots of depth in this image. .
Great scene with fore-ground, mid-ground and distant layers of peaks in the clouds in the background.
The view, where I'm standing right on the edge here, makes it somehow exciting :-)
    Well processed!

I need to get rid of the pillar on the left, I think. Does this look better?

Better :) I would go with even tighter crop (left, right and top), and maybe geometry (horizon, perspective) needs a little adjustment too.

  • May 4, 2026, 3:07 p.m.

I'm not cropping top, left & right as I like the two windows either side. I could get rid of the man in front of the pillar and the god adverts on the right. If I crop from the bottom, I think it looks worse since I realised I need to straighten it a little bit.

    Same location, 2 different views

Visited hotel in city center and had opportunity to go outside terrace/balcony on upper floor and take some photos showing 2 different faces of city.

Cool. Really nice! And fun for you, too. THANKS for these views. I find them very interesting. But I am a bit puzzled. The first picture says "1/1000" but the cars and bus at the bottom of the frame are blurred? People must really drive fast in Tallinn! LOL? And if you shot at f/11 (and a slower shutter speed) you wouldn't even SEE the bus! Like those old black and white city scenes from c.1900 taken with large glass-plate field cameras. You know... the guy standing under the black sheet! LOL. :-) :-)

    You are very observant, sir.
I took that photo as HHHR (hand-held high resolution) to get bit more details out. In OM System camera HHHR takes 5 photos (I think) and then merges them together into 50 (or one can set it also to 25) Mpix shot. Actual resolution is not comparable to real 50 Mpix sensor, but it still gives some boost over regular 20Mpix sensor shot. With sensor readout speed of 1/160th of second 5 photos with fast shutter speed take ca 1/30th of second, this explains the blurring.

Quite a contrast to see the lovely old city on one side and the growing modern city on the other side.

After I relooked at this I figured out the GPS had not updated the camera for far too long. I knew it didn't look right. It was near the turn around on Arches National Park Rd. I tracked down were I was for this shot.
