The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

Thread Guidelines:

1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
   Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
   ”Likes” are encouraged too.
5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Following a stream

On one of our hiking trips in Carinthia (Kärnten) in the summer of ’24 we followed a little mountain stream on a lovely sunny morning.
I only got around to processing these today, especially for the weekly Landscape thread 😉

Let there Was Light

On our yearly roadtrip to Wyoming. Today woke up early to arrive at the Dakota Badlands before dawn. Were met with big horn sheep, deer and prong horns grazing with an occasional bison lumbering through. A few prairie dogs scampering about. Came on a prairie rattler after a night of hunting looking for a place to hid from the sun in a 105 degree day with bluebird skies.

Then the sun rose.

From Silver Fall State Park in Oregon. The horizontal is a three image stack for depth of field.

Wow, looks like the sky is on fire

Great light show !
The low light here makes some lovely long shadows that enhances the 3D feel in this image.
Looking at photos like these of the Badlands it appears quite barren and hardly seems possible that so much wildlife is around

I like the first, good shot , the mist adds a lot of atmosphere. It feels like the water has reached the edge of the world ;-)

The second is really good; very colourful with a vibrant mix of those complementary reds and greens.
The white from the waterfall seems to make those colours even more intense.
At first I thought those reds were all autumn leaves, but seeing that they are mostly red fungi makes it even more interesting.
The composition is nicely balanced too

Away from the formations there are thousands of acres of prairie grasslands in the park. There are springs, streams and a river. The native prairie grasses evolved to be deep rooted and drought resistant. When the white man pushed West he found on the Western prairie “Bison as far as the eye could see.” It was estimated that at one time the Bison population on the Western prairie plains was 60 million. Then pioneers introduced cattle brought over from Europe. The cattle carried Brucellosis and introduced it to the Bison and it spread like wildfire.

I really like the1st, 2nd and 4th one. The 2nd one also makes me want to take a nap. The first two feel like they are ready for a postcard. I like the mystery of the "around the bend" feel in stream/creek in the 4th one.

Thank you. I actually reduced the saturation a bit on those reds. Those mushrooms and few leaves were intense in there saturation, plus I'm pretty sure I was using a linear polarizer as well.

Definitely getting some other worldly planet/movie set vibes. Shadows are well captured.

That's beautiful. What time of year? There's a lot of moisture, so I'm guessing it's not summertime (right now) in the Cascades?

I like this one. It looks very "familiar" -- could easily be a picture taken here locally in the PNW Cascades.

Oh my! That is VERY beautiful and dramatic. The brightness, color and contrast are perfect.

I've taken very few "landscape" pictures this week. But here are a couple, 20 minutes apart. Sitting in the back yard talking to my wife. Enjoying the warm breeze. I had the camera sitting on the patio table. A couple of boats passed by. Camera was pointed in the same direction both times. Oh well. I figured that the background (mountain silhouette) qualifies for the "landscape" category!

This is October of 2024. Cool/damp Autumn days. It's actually at a lower flow because it hadn't truly started raining for the season yet. It's about 45-60 minutes east and slightly south of Salem, Oregon.
