That pinkish light on the beautiful mountains is good. Personally I'm not so convinced about the barren rice fields. It's a good documentary shot but quite different to my, perhaps, more "romantic" style. Documentary shots are, of course, perfectly OK and completely justified :-)
This is a wide crop from a larger image. I wanted to take a photo which emphasised the width of the canal lock gates and their handles. The lock below and the canal above just put it all in context.
Alan might have got quite wet if he had moved closer ;-)
I think it works reasonably well to get that "wide" look as it is. The pano format helps, although it might have had a slightly more airy feeling to the shot if it had been cropped just a bit less at the top, the top boat would get a bit more breathing space and it would feel less cramped at the top.
Thanks - I'm away for a couple of days. When I get back home I will try that - but I don't want to lose the "Wide" aspect - although that would move the lock gate arm more to the middle of the picture.
Unfortunately not much. 53mm eq focal length is not best to emulate wide view. You could try some fisheye like distortion :)
Also it is hard to estimate lock size - there is almost nothing to compare. Boat and people are too far away.
Arvo, you are not seeing what I see. It doesn't matter how big or small the lock is - to my eyes, just the fact that it is a panorama with the lock handles taking up the width gives me a feeling of scale.
I feel the width a little bit with the lock handles. I think what may have helped more would be a lower line of sight, if possible. My eye feels like it's looking down and back, as much as wide. Also, all the other lines in the photo (the fence, the rock walls, the individual stones in the walls, the narrowness of the canal) are leading front to back except the gate itself, which further impacts the lack of width. Depending on where you're standing, would you have been able to hold the camera at waist level or lower? Or put it on a low positioned tripod or sat or crouched?
