    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

    Landmannalaugar

    Another dip into the archives,…

The spectacular Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve is located in the Icelandic highlands.
Five centuries ago a volcanic eruption covered the entire area in lava, leaving behind a unique terrain filled with thermal springs and multi-coloured mountains.
A great adventurous place; where you have to drive through rivers to get to the best parts.

    Fishing the Upper Green

From the archives. The Green river has it headwaters in the Wind River range of Wyoming. The Green River is part of the Colorado river basin and given climate change the only river that is keeping the Colorado from going dry. This image was taken in the headwaters of the Green. The Green is also know as one of the best brown trout rivers in the world.

On this days three fishermen found a productive "hole."

    Sunrays

It's been a while since I posted anything here. I took a picture from the same view around the same time last year. I do prefer those pictures, but the view in the Alpbach Tal was gorgeous as always.

These pictures are two variations on the same evening sun beaming through the clouds

I really like the sense of contrast in scale between the 3 (especially the 2nd and 3rd). Definitely gives me adventure vibes.

Feels like a great photo to put in a travel brochure, even in black and white. Lots of visual interest and story telling going on. I might up the exposure just a tad to at least get the human to show up a bit better.

Three trees. Reaching back to last fall for these. And really looking forward to fall (favorite season of the year) this year.

A few quick shots from the Sony 100-400 f 4.5-8 that arrived this morning. Its a slow lens, but more than makes up for it by how light and effortless it is to shoot handheld.

Nature taking over, slowly but surely.

These are all great! Such lovely colours, I'm looking forward to the autumn time too!
Autumn is all about such wonderful reds, yellows and oranges just like a sunset, it is all about the colours.

I once asked our resident B&W expert, tprevatt how it was possible to capture the beauty of fall in a time before colour film was invented. His reply was about looking for contrast that is special for that time of year.
...And of course Ansel Adams had shown us the way a long time ago (link)

Your second photo is a great example of what he was describing. I've taken the liberty of making a B&W conversion along those lines.

This is really a great composition. the symmetry and the dissymmetry ( one gray one black) in one excellent composition. Nicely done.

Nice. The photo in that link is one of my favorites of his. Also, Redwoos, Bull Creek Flats is another favorite.

I quite like the 1st and 3rd. The one fence post is slightly distracting in the 1st, but overall a nicely balanced composition. The horse- what tprevamtt said. I also like the small spacing you allowed between the two neck to see a bit of background.

Together with your text, this photo tells a good story.
About how far would the fishermen have had to hike to get to this spot?

    Great!
I much prefer the first here. Those sun rays, some call them "God rays", look so impressive, appearing as they do, through small holes in dark clouds and turning a normal landscape shot into something special. In the first we also see more of the lay of the land and details of the pastures.

These two are really good. The two horses together make for a harmonious shot. Nicely seen and captured.

    Good lighting in the first.

Your new lens seems to be working :-)
A fairly lightweight telephoto zoom is something I've been looking for for my Nikon Z system. Maybe they'll make a slightly lighter version of the rather heavy 100-400. That would be nice.

Actually not very far. There is a forest service road that parallels the river up to Green River lake which is a glacier made lake and the head waters of the river. The distance of the road to the river varies from 100 meters to maybe a quarter of a mile. At his point it was about 100 meters. I've fished the green multiple times. When I lived in Colorado and my fly rod was a permanent resident of my backpack, I I was a pretty good fly fisherman. However, living in the East and only getting a little time to fish for trout, my reflexes are rusty. Browns require probably the fastest reflexes followed by the cut throat to hook. I've had a lot of strikes in the Green - but yet to hook a Brown. The bass in the East, spoil one. They grab the fly and don't like to let go.

    Three interesting shots! All good.
I think I prefer the first one. Well composed with the chosen framing; it seems to invite you in.
The B&W rendering seems appropriate and you've made some great contrast with the pp.
It is also quite forgiving of the rust stains you can see in the colour versions ;-)

The first two pics are great, but THIS is beautiful. It reminds me a little bit of Haleakalā in Hawaii -- although Landmannalaugar is much more extensive in size (from what I see in your photo). Really nice!

Racine, Wisconsin. A quick side trip while driving from Chicago to Milwaukee. Very nice community. An old industrial/factory town that is reinventing itself.

The lone fisherman is certainly enjoying the sun. Nice shot!
Looks like it could be a good place to fish.
