    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

A few more from Saxony Switzerland

Here are the last shots I’ll post from this trip that we made about 2 weeks ago.
All just processed with ACDSee ultimate 2026.

The start of the hike up to the Bastei (the place I posted last week) is in Kurort Rathen.
Maybe you know already, how in German, the terms “Bad” and “Kurort” are titles given to a town that is a recognised spa or health resort.

To get to Kurort Rathen from our hotel in Bad Schandau using public transport, you have to cross the Elbe by ferry, take the local train on the other side, and then cross back over on another ferry. It might all sound very complicated, but the journey was seamless, as my wife is wonderful at organizing such trips 😊

This last one could be of interest to any model railway fans. The real big train is driving past and dwarfing a model railway exhibition, just below it, called “Eisenbahnwelten” in Kurort Rathen. There’s over 5km of model tracks with up to 40 trains, all running at the same time, but you can hardly see any of those trains and the many tiny buildings in my photo here. It is just a crop of a wider shot

    DSC_5676 - Copy smaller.JPG

We didn’t view it this time, but this photo below taken from their official website gives you an idea of what you’d see if you did visit the "Eisenbahnwelten".

    Christmas Markets

It's coming up to that time of year again. I spent an hour or two having fun with a fisheye lens during a visit to Salzburg. Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea.

    Very colourful!
That's an interesting experiment with a fisheye lens at a Christmas market.
I think this 2nd one with the long tunnel is my favourite. Almost like it's snowing on a walk through a forest.

Nice shot! I get the feeling it wouldn't be such a good idea to go for a swim here; probably some sort of strong hungry animal watching my every move ;-)

That came out really well, Nicely exposed, the highlights are all well controlled A good mix of different colours and interesting details here in the cityscape.
Taken at ISO 25600! The image looks noise free and very smooth; maybe the noise reduction is just a touch too much, but that is a matter of taste.

Two very different images. Both very good :-)

8 minutes exposure for the first shot, time enough for the car to drive all the way down that road leaving a great light trail. The light trail looks even brighter and more impressive next to the almost black rocks. But it's the gentle colours in the sky and its reflection on the water that make this special. That colour is even echoed in the light snow covering on the mountains.

A much shorter exposure time in the second with "only" 6.5s ;-)
That has smoothed the water as desired but there's still some structure visible so you can see how it's flowing.
The autumn colours are always a favourite of mine and look good here.

A beautiful, very relaxed scene. That sky and its reflections are amazing, and the small boat gives just the right little point of attention to the image.
The way that layer of low cloud is hanging over the water adds to the atmosphere.
It's worth getting up early for photos like this!

This is the Withalacoochee river. It is a good river to fly fish for bass. It has a sold base which leads out to a deep channel. I've waded it more than once. Are there alligators there? Sure. However, gators tend to eat at night and sleep and digest their food during the day. However, I keep a careful eye out. I will say I would never go into water when I moved to FL. Then I took a trip down to Clyde Butcher's gallery in the Big Cypress in South FL. Here is how Cylde got his fabulous imagers of the Everglades,

    clydebutcher.com/artists/clyde/bio

He would put his gear into a canoe and wade out into the swamp. In fact now you can go on a swamp walk led by Clyde's staff to see the glades. Clyde used to lead them himself. Below check out the picture of former US President and First Lady, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter stomping through the swamp on a trip led by Clyde. When I first visited Clyde, he took me out into the swamp. He always said, the gators and snakes will be long gone by the time you get there. The thing you have to worry about is the wild hogs and you can hear and see them a long way off.

Really like the feeling of calmness. The colors accentuate that feeling as well. Nicely captured.

Ohhhhh... the garden railway. Very impressive! If I ever go for a visit to the Dresden area, seeing THAT would be my primary objective! Thanks to the "insider information" you have provided! LOL I notice that they also distribute/sell the equipment (Märklin, PIKO and Bachmann). When I was a kid, I had a decent HO model train set (US/Tyco and German/Fleischman) that I built in the attic of the house where I grew up. FUN.

I like these, the candle shop photo in particular. The EXIF says "50mm" but I'm guessing... "fisheye" is less then 10mm, right? What lens are you using? When you are walking in the city, WIDE is good. My go-to favorite is the 20/1.8 G on FF (lightweight and compact). But of course, similar to telephoto (you're never long enough) the same applies sometimes to street scenes (you're never wide enough). LOL So, I also use the 14-24 for walking around -- which is a nice lens, but big/heavy. How does this X-mount fisheye "feel" on the XT-1? And... Salzburg... Dresden... and all places in-between -- I would LOVE to travel there!

Talk about "tonality" -- there you have it! It's all right there in the middle -- nothing extreme -- but yet... so distinctive and subtle. I have only been to Florida one time for 2 days (about 15-20 years ago). The first night I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. Oohhhhhh. The next night I stayed at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. Aaaahhhh. So, I probably don't know the REAL Florida! But that is a part of Florida, too. LOL.

Holy smokes... a night shot (right up my alley) and an amazing result (high ISO handheld). How much "work" did you do in post? It's beautiful. The colors, tones and IQ in general.

Very nice early morning feel. But I had to look it up... Lac Léman (lacus Lemannus)? In doing so, I got a little geography/history lesson! Ah yes, Lake Geneva. Now I know where this is! It's a huge lake! HUGE. Dresden, Salzburg, somewhere in Florida, Bosphorus, Mono Lake... and Lac Léman -- all this week.

My landscape (cityscape/portscape) contribution this week. Terminal 18 / East Waterway. At the moment I am in a bit of a photo "rut" -- trying to find a weekly picture/subject to post. Way too busy with work and unable to "get out" (not much free time). So, I end up stopping at the same familiar place each week as I drive back home from a client's office at the end of the day. But it is a good place to sit in the car for a moment, to contemplate, listen to some music, and try to relieve the stress. Then, set-up the tripod, mount the camera, and take a short evening walk. Basically, the SAME subject/theme as last time. I will try to diversify or go to the archives from some variety. But I'm trying to make it a "P52" and get out with the camera. The odd thing is, being in the city/industrial area, it is always quiet and peaceful. Nobody else around. It is fun to take the picture and fun to do the post-processing. And it is also nice to have a weekly place to see what others have captured through THEIR viewfinder!
