Good morning to everyone, wherever you are in the world...I'm off to an Escher exhibition so won't be around for much of the day.

    Looking Back

It is just too hot to go out unless necessary here. Every so often I decide I must digitise my old negatives and slides. I do some and then get bored with it. I found a batch of slides from the Nineties Italy. It seems a different world.

It is pretty cool to be able to PP slides and correct things, and then see them easily enlarged on screen.

I have just finished a novel centred on a little hamlet called Vercallo, that I am fond of. Here are a few pictures of its last days as a farming community.

This is a fantastic set. Very poignant. What a character in #2.
I really must do the same. I have some slides I love. I did have an Ohnar slide copier years ago which wasn't bad but I'll touch base with you again on how you do it. Wouldn't want to spend a huge amount on something I'll only use once.

    Haapsalu
Last 3 weeks I posted photos from Narva, 210 km east of Tallinn, right ar border with russia. Today photos from opposite side, 100 km to west coast, from Haapsalu. It's known for its mud baths and remains of bishop's castle. It has little cozy old town, looking more like swedish town. And it's not surprise, as this area was inhabited with swedes until end of WW Ii. Also it's birth town of Ilona Wiklund, illustrator of Lindgren's books, so i had feeling that i can see red hair girl with horse any minute coming around corner.

    Ghosts

The top of our local hill has a cap of small trees, mostly hawthorn, mostly quite ancient by tree standards. But delving into local archaeology, this hilltop was once a settlement of Beaker culture people, maybe 2000-1800 BC. I often wonder what the great....-grandfathers of these trees would have 'seen' in their times.

Nostalgia can be both comforting and unsettling. I know of a few hamlets in the french Alps that have undergone a similar fate.

The planters in the first photo are rather original.
Is there a story behind the 'cake car'?

What a wonderful shot, and good idea to get a low viewpoint shot.

There is something quite monstrous about this shot.

Yeas ago I had a copier made up in a workshop, that I combined with some enlarger parts. I still use it for 120 film. Then I bought a Nikon ES2 slide/negative copier to fit on a Nikon Z50 macro. It has a 62mm filter ring. But you can get filter step down rings to adapt it to any 50mm FF macro lens. It costs about €180, but you must cost in a 50mm macro lens with autofocus. It's only defect is that it does not like thick slide film mounts (I have some old thin slide mounts that I use in this case) . It has a carrier for negatives as well.

    It works brilliantly for me.

These ancient places often have a strange atmosphere, You may remember Solsbury hill in Bath. The shape of those tree trunks is very evocative.

Indeed I remember Solsbury Hill. My brother lives at the foot of it in Swainswick. I know he finds it a very special place.

I used to live in Swainswick too, I went to the village school and my Mother and Grandmother are buried in the Swainswick churchyard.
