Outstanding. The text gives the essentials and the images bring it to life.
I like the progression from the concentration of the making to the triumph of the flight. The grim rubbish heap is here but it never outweighs the spirit of the young men - they are on top of it.
I'm interested in the clothing and haircuts of these guys. They look well cared for. That's great.

Yes the sky is definitely burning here!
Nicely exposed sky with those lovely colours and framed with all those silhouettes

Nice how all the lady visitors have appropriate flowery dresses ;-)

I think it is OK with the half submerged log.
You could of course also zoom right in for quite a different shot with just the house, balanced with the reflection.
    Maybe like this ?

Great portraits of the kids and their games here.
Making, and flying, kites is fun wherever you are :-)

Thanks minniev and all for the feedback on this photo.
Over our couple of days on Hydra, I must have taken 20+ photos of this doorway and the bouganvillea. The shapes, colours and light fascinated me. I tried it in many different lights with sun and shadows on different angles across the door and on th bouganvillea on the ground.See attached for an example. For most of the shots, I wasn't interested in the pathway on the right. On one trip to the door when different light looked likely, the donkey taxi turned up and that's this shot. There's doorway and Bouganvillea.

[edit by Alan - fixed the picture display - not sure about the last sentence.]

Thanks for fixing this Alan. The last sentence should have been. "Here's the doorway and Bouganvillea." The last is one of the many I tried with different angles, light and shadows across the scene.

It's an interesting concept, although the links between artworks and the flower displays seem a little tenuous.
My favourite, both photographically and in terms of links to the art, is the first one. The predominant blacks and greys have splashes of red/pink flowers, similar to the painting, and the burnt plants tie in nicely with the rather morbid subject in the painting. The way you have photographed the foreground, gives it a dominance, which seems to threaten the visitor and being slightly out of focus, the phone's camera has rendered it in an appropriate painterly way.
I enjoyed how you managed to include visitors, who had entered into the spirit of the exhibition with their choice of floral clothes.

I second Minnie's comments, especially how the scene appears to be a diptych of two separate photos, with very different but at the same time symbiotic subjects. I also like the little hand-rail linking the door and donkey as the two main subjects.
As a matter of personal taste, I think I would not have brightened the right hand scene quite so much, as it has rather too much of an HDR look for me.
Your bonus image is very good too. Getting down low amongst the fallen flowers has really paid off.

The colours are great and it is a lovely sunset, but I also like the way the trees, left and right, perfectly frame the conifer in the middle.

The bright reds and golds make a very rich and colourful interior. Wearing bright red clothes would normally be a guarantee that you stand out like a sore thumb, but here the red robes of the monks blend into the background, and it is the pastel blues and greys of the visitors' clothes making them stand out!

Thanks for the teaser to what looks like an interesting exhibition. It is a good job your cousin's accidental participation in a fight is only an illusion, otherwise the bruises may have made her every bit as colourful as the other artwork!

I am very jealous of your garden. I wouldn't dare to photograph mine. Nobody wants to see weeds after all.
My particular favourite is the cherry blossom, which no doubt saves you a trip to Japan every year.

I prefer the first for the reasons Mike mentioned. I also think the branch in the corner is another leading line into the frame.
Minnie mentioned the pylon, which you could remove, but I think there is also an argument for leaving everything as it is. It is a beautiful, tranquil, pastoral scene, but then the viewer notices the pylons, the power cables and the wind turbines sneaking in around the edges, They do not dominate, or even distract much, but show an encroachment of technology. That in turn leads to an interesting thought process about the relative benefits of untouched natural beauty and electrical power for the digital photographer....

    Dear all,

Sorry for my limited availability in the past week.
    Been hiking and biking.
Just got back home but now work is swamping me a bit.
Just know that I liked many of the images of this week and also many of the comments (I have been reading on my phone, but posting elaborate comments on the small keyboard is a real PITA).

Tomorrow we will start a new thread.
I will include a link to a discussion that is currently active on the future of our forum.

Here it is already. Please take a look and contribute your thoughts if you feel so inclined.
