The person at the back with the hi-viz is distracting. My eyes are led to him (her?) by following the arms. And the shadow is cut off.

But the isolation is good and the "gritty" works well.

    Ghost of the skater

As an image it's interesting, but I can't see the context in relation to the title (titles are important in competitions). How do we know it's a skater?

Good for isolating the suject, but there's too much going on in the background and it's distracting me.

    Running from the shade

Darkened and blurred background, cropped to remove part of the statue, brought up details in skaters pants.

I actually liked this one a lot. But it didn't get the votes, so it didn't win. The subject is there and you can see a blur of something in the background - an audience maybe? I think it would have done well in the competition.

I love the B&W but as I said above, the background is distracting. Judges don't like distractions.

Love the isolation. It would do really well in a competition. But maybe it just needs some background to bring out the skateboarder's location.

A good intepretation. But i want to see more of the person. It would probably do well in a comp.

The image has been rotated a bit and this put me off. But I like the purple contrasting with the persons hat - that works well.

Ouch. Too overexposed and all the distractions in the background. Sorry, but this wouldn't do well.

Well, I completely disagree about that. In this case and, unlike with some of the other edits, the background is both darker and softer than the subject and, being B&W, there are no distracting color blobs either. I intentionally processed the background the way I did to add depth and context. You can like it or hate it, but that was my thinking here.

That's fine. Everyone has a different opinion of what judges say. You should hear the discussions we have at the club after a competition night. I was just trying to put out what I thought the judge of the night would have said, based on what he said about all our pictures that night.

Anyway, over to you for the next one.

    Cheers

    Alan
