Alan, thanks for the update and reality with time to consider our position.

What I like about this place.
I much prefer threaded view for conducting conversations. But. We can't have it here or anywhere else that I know of. Threaded view is essential for conversations between many participants. When we had considerably more participants, the time required was exhausting and the conversation exchanges not satisfying. I'm finding the size of our present membership plus the weekly formats is manageable.
A real plus of the present platform is the definition/size/quality of the images we can post For a site where the image is our stated priority, that's great and I wouldn't want to see this downgraded. Similarly for speed of operation. I'm not well informed on the following but I think the costs are related to the bandwidth required by the site??? As far as I can see, it is working well for present requirements. Do we have more bandwidth and storage than we need for our present operations? When DPREv was originally established I imagine that a much larger pool of users was envisaged?
Again, here I'm in water over my head. As I understand it, all sites need periodic maintenance. Alan, do you have the skills or can you access whatever might be required ? ie., do we need to be allowing for this in working out a budget and subscription model? What I'm getting at is the longer term sustainability of the site. I don't see point in a short term band aid and we all are very conscious of how much this relies on Alan's energy and commitment.

So. I enjoy the place as it is and find the numbers workable for my needs. I'd like to see it continue and I'm prepared to contribute. But I think we need a clearer picture of the anticipated expenses. I also think Alan needs to be realistic about his own time and energy. A lot falls on his shoulders and if it is all too much, so be it.

Martin is still around - he's just updated our quota. And we are getting backups (I am told) as part of the fees we pay. So, I think the site is safe enough for now. But no one is working on any update to the base Misago images. I think we can only work with what we've got.

I am looking around at other sites, but the stumbling block is either the amount of storage we want (I want at least 1Tb) or the access speed (if I run it from my home server).

The cost is mainly due to the storage - we have 6Tb available to us. Bandwidth is part of it too, but not a big part.

It is probably no big surprise that I am of the same mind with Mike Fewster and Minniev on this.
(Truth be told: Minniev alerted me to this discussion, because normally my focus is exclusively with the Wednesday C&C thread.)

    My (additional) thoughts in shorthand:

    • I loved the forum at DPR and came here considering DPrevived as a lifeboat from a sinking ship.
I was a bit frustrated that we lost the comfort of threaded view and did not manage to regain that.
But I have come to understand that this is probably a fact of life.

    • In any case: the lifeboat has become the permanent vessel for many years now already and I am accustomed to it and attached to it.

    • My main focus is the continuation of the Wednesday No Theme C&C thread, that has been a part of my life for 17 years now.
I really would hate to lose that, and the camaraderie that comes with our experiment in peer-to-peer constructive C&C.

    • I am more than willing to make a donation or contribution (on a regular basis) to help preserve and continue that legacy.
(As a matter of principle, I was against paying for forum access to DPR in its new guise, because that was clearly already a corporate and profitable venture.
However, it is clear that DPrevived is different: a non-profit gathering of photographers and volunteers. That I am willing to support financially with a modest subscription and/or donation or whatever.)

    • I have ZERO knowledge about the mechanics of websites, forums or data bases and will trust the more knowledgeable members in that respect to find the best solution.

    @AlanSh
Be careful with receiving payments into your personal PayPal account.
Businesses like this use AI security bots.

PayPal’s "Friends and Family" (F&F) feature is strictly for personal gifts and reimbursements between people who know each other. Using it to fund a service—even a community forum—is technically a commercial transaction. PayPal considers this "fee avoidance," as the owner avoids the standard transaction fees associated with "Goods and Services”.

PayPal's automated systems monitor for "unusual account activity". Receiving multiple payments from different countries in a short period can trigger flags for:

Business activity on a personal account: If the volume looks like business income, PayPal may force a migration to a Business Account where F&F is not permitted.

Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks: Frequent small global transfers are often scrutinised under UK financial regulations to prevent illicit activity.
If flagged, the owner may have their funds frozen or their account permanently banned.

There's no choice for me to use a PayPal Personal Account to pay Alan. It won't work, the link which Dprevived provided. Unless I don't donate.

I only give out my personal paypal account in exceptional cases. I think that this was the second one this year - both from Singapore, so it's not exactly money laundering 😁

Greg, thank you for your donation. Much appreciated.

Roel, you have been a big part in helping to keep this forum alive and friendly. So, thank you for your support. It's not going away if I have anything to say about it.

    Hi,

Just for completeness, my donation cleared with my bank (via PayPal) today. So,.for me, it worked from end-to-end.

I am prepared to contribute £52 a year towards the expenses. Indeed I shall do this early next week.

Thank you Alan and Arvo, and any others who may be hiding behind the scenes of whom I am unaware.

I am happy to join a private thread on these matters. I would encourage others to contribute what they can afford annually. Thanks to those who have already opened their wallets!

    To Alan's various suggested options:

    1. Do nothing and hope that contributions from members will continue.

    An obvious non-starter!

    2. Close off in 6 months time once the existing cash has run out.

No need for this: I see we already have support to keep it going longer. I think an annual gentle appeal posting will always keep the wolf from the door.

    3. Move the forum to a free site and start again – this would be one based on myBB or similar which I can maintain. But we cannot transfer the images and posts.

No. Constant reinvention of the wheel is a waste of time, as the members of UK political parties have been discovering in the last 10 years since the bright idea called Brexit!

    4. Something else.

-- Why is there more discussion in this thread about what goes on at DPR than here? I no longer maintain an account there but I lurk from time to time. At present, the rate of new postings in the fora seems to be comparable to that here: not very exciting. As far as I am concerned, the design of this site is quite adequate. I do not use threaded views.

-- DPR editorial is much more interesting than the photos posted there. I know that Alan is apparently not interested in news items about equipment; but I personally think these would round out the experience on a site such as ours. Full descriptions/reviews are not needed; but a pinned thread with pointers to new gear and trends would keep us informed without having to visit DPR or elsewhere for this.

-- When not logged in here one is told things like "You dont have permission to do that." I would change this to something like "Why not register, join our friendly members, and be able to read this page?"

-- The encouragement of more stimulating thread titles (aka clickbait) might be helpul to encourage greater participation.

    David,

Thank you for the post - I will try and address your comments:

Thank you for anything you can offer - and the same goes to anyone else. I do NOT want to make a profit out of this, but I would like enough to keep us going, and so far, we are meeting that requirements. At the moment, I don't see the need for a private thread, but I am happy set one up if enough people want to join one.

Actually, that one is the one that is working - see above. I have no intention of closing off and I I agree with you that number 3 is a non-starter.

Is there? I hadn't noticed. in any case, I don't see DPReview as our competitor - we do complementary things.

I'm not against links to gear reviews - but I do not want it taking over or even approaching that. If someone would like to manage a forum on gear, than I can create it. But I think that is what DPReview is best at.

I can't change any of that. Sorry.

    Can you make some suggestions?

With regards to an annual amount, PayPal broke this for me and others.
