Read Posts Are Marked Unread Again

Expected Results

Posts that were read should be marked as read indefinitely.

Actual Results

Posts in the middle of a subscribed thread randomly keep appearing unread again in the subscribed threads section, and can’t be reliably marked as read by scrolling past the affected post.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Participate in a discussion thread, and make sure to be subscribed about updates (user preferences).

2. Scroll through all posts so that all posts are marked as read (outlined badge).

3. Wait until the discussion continues and new posts are created.

4. Repeat 2), and wait for a couple of hours.

5. Go to the subscribed threads page, discover that a thread is marked as updated (filled out badge).

6. Tap on the badge and the navigation will jump to a random post in the middle of a thread (you can make sure that there are no new posts by navigating to the end of the thread).

Note: This bug appears randomly, but often enough that reproduction shouldn’t be an issue. As I don’t understand why posts are marked as unread in the first place this could be also two issues.

Is the post you are redirected to marked as read when you click the thread icon? It may be that layout reflow caused by images being loaded pushes the post the site intended to redirect you to down from viewport. 🤔

Yes, in new approach post is marked as read as soon as part of it is visible on a screen, but „new” label now only disappears after posts list is refreshed. This can be done manually by user but also happens every two minutes on its own.

Thread icon is this bugger that shows either thread with unread contents or thread without any unread content:

For reference: This happens on my account for these two threads as an example:

The only difference I currently see in these threads is that they both have a higher post count than the other working ones (>100 and >200).

The posts I get when tapping on the icon and which can’t get marked as read (among others in these threads):

If this may may be viewport related issue, it might also be helpful to know that I use the Safari browser on the latest available iOS version.

I agree, good catch. What’s the use case for randomly reading posts in the same thread anyway?

My OCD is also beyond the roof, especially as the subscribed threads section is my start page here and I get confused every time I look at it.
